Subject: Treadmill - getting your land legs back?

Totally new to treadmills this year (finally got over that fear of tripping, faceplanting and flying off the back of it!) and I've noticed something...

When I finish up and get off, invariably I must look like I've been drinking because it still feels like the floor is moving under me. (Like after being on a boat and trying to get your land legs back.) It usually doesn't last long, but I don't seem to notice anyone else having trouble walking across the room at the gym when they get done with the treadmill.

So, is it just me?

No, it's not just you...others may fake it well or maybe it is less noticeable than you think? I once almost fell coming out of the treadmill

I do 90% of my running training on a treadmill so trust me, I have been there, done that.  I nearly fell many times in the beginning.

What has help me eliminate this problem is to do a good cool down with a couple minutes of walking.  After the walking cool down, I don't get dizzy or anything after that anymore.  Legs feel good also.

have you done a Brick workout yet?  When you get off your bike and start running, this is what your legs feel like till you get used to it.

which reminds me.....

Happens to me too - first couple of times getting off the treadmill I looked a little like Julie Moss did back in the 1982 Hawaii Ironman when she ran out of mojo. Also feels like I've just learned to walk too! Being in the Coast Guard, you'd think I'd be used to it but ....

I have found that after the running workout, I slow it down to about 2.5 MPH (which feels like a crawl) to transition back to dry land. This seems to help a bit.

I don't necessarily enjoy the treadmill, but it does have some advantages. Keeps me from slacking when I get home tired and realize I only need to get to the basement to get a workout in.

Definately do a cool down by walking on the treadmill after the run.

Even if you are outside running, a cool down walk afterward is a good thing.

You live in D.C.?? I'm in Fulton, which is about 15 minutes north of D.C. (past Burtonsville).

Unless you have some mitigating circumstances there is no reason to run on the dreadmill. I've done all my runs this and last year outdoors. It's only been brutal a few times, but I've survived!

But I hate the treadmill and refuse to use them, so I guess I'm biased ....

I am a complete wuss when it comes to weather.   So, I've learned to deal with the treadmill.

Thanks all - it's nice to know it's not just me. (It's so strange to suddenly not quite be able to walk straight...)

I don't usually use the treadmill's cool down feature but instead like getting off the sucker and walking about on my own - sounds like that is the key here, so I'll spend a little more time on it and hopefully I won't go listing off into the wall next time around.

Ditto. I do the same thing. For me it equals out to a half mile walk after my run.

According to my physical therapist, yes. There is some shock absorbtion built into most treadmills, which makes them easier on the joints than pavement.

Oddly though, I tend to run faster outside than on a treadmill.
