Subject: Prescription Googles?

Have any of you gotten prescription googles? Where did you get them?

The googles need to fit well plus we don't want to spend to much since Emily is a kid.

My 11 year old daughter has the tri bug, picked a BT Sprint plan to follow, joined BT as EmilyG and she started her training plan this weekend. She can't see very well without glasses and in ows she has a very difficult time sighting and seeing the correct way to go.

Any tips on where you got them would be great!

Kathy, I don't have exact prescription goggles (too expensive!), but for $24 CDN, I found a pair of Speedo Optical Corrective Goggles that work just fine.

The difference between my right and left eye isn't huge (-2.75 and -3.25) so I picked up a pair of -3.00's. I got them at a local swimwear shop.. I think they went up to strengths of -8.00 or -9.00, but I'm not exactly sure.

I usually swim with my contacts in, but that may not be a option for everyone. I use weekly disposables so I dont worry too much about them coming out in the water to much. I keep an extar pair in T-1.

Emily has very signficant astigmatisms so wearing contacts is out for her now at her age. I'm not sure that the + type generic would work but it is worth looking into...much less money. Do you know the brand you have?

Kathy,

I have way to much experience in this topic. Many manufacturers make prescription goggles and you can buy them right over the net for a reasonable price. If the eyes are of similiar prescription its simple. My problem is that my eyes are significantly different and most of the ones I found couldn't accomodate that. I ended up going to the eyedoctor.com and they made me some with my full prescription. They are Barracuda's and I like them alot. If her eyes have a similiar prescription I think you can get a pair from Keifer for $30.

Prescription googles? Why would you need a doctor to tell you which search engine to use?

I have severe astigmatism, and wear a 4.5 in my left eye, and am legally blind in my right. I also found out the hard way that relying on your goggles to help you see is a bad idea. Got mine knocked off on an ocean training swim two years ago, and was completely blind in the water. Since then, I try to swim without any visual aids. That way, if something happens, I know what to do. Very inexpensive! I've gotten very good at judging color contrast, and sensing movement. I also find that my hearing is much sharper when I'm in the water, as compared to on the roads. Just a thought...

I was really badly nearsided my first season of Tri-ing. Did the contacts under the goggle thing, but that really hurt after long sessions at the pool. I used to have my husband come with me to the pool and time laps for me, etc. so I could swim without vision correction. In OWS, I had no choice but to wear contacts.

I asked my optometrist about perscription goggles (she's a triathlete too), but she recommended lasiks. Probably not the best solution for your daughter. Talk to her optometrist, she/he may have the best suggestion.

I used to have a pair of "prescription" goggles that I bought in Hong Kong.  You know, the Chinese people are more susceptible to near-sightedness due to their eye shape, and it's so common for people to wear glasses.  They sell prescription goggles in sporting good stores like reading glasses.  They don't have the exact strength like glasses that you wear, but I chose one that is close enough so that I can see alright.  I think they're from Speedo.  However, I had to replace them often as the plastic surface got scratched easily.  After a few pairs, I gave up and wore contacts with regular goggles.

Though not as common, I'm sure you can find some here.  What is Emily's prescription?  If you can get them here, I'll see if I can have friends to get some from HK and send them to me.

edit:  I'm not sure if they have goggles for astigmatism.  I didn't have astigmatism.  Just near-sightedness. Not even that now.  I did LASIK.

A good friend of mine has a pair of Lane  4 prescription goggles... I know he gets them over the internet... From where, I don't know... He loves them, and is pretty dang blind. If you have different prescriptions in each eye, you can order two sets of goggles, and switch them around...

Look up Lane 4... Good Luck!
