Welcome to BT!

I'll be doing the Philly Tri a month earlier, along with several other BTrs.

If we make it out alive, you'll be the first to know.

Actually, don't worry. I hear that the water is monitored closely and that the swim portion will be cancelled if it is not healthy. Least that's what I hear.

Welcome to BT!

I swam in the Schuylkill last summer for the Philly Tri.  Believe it or not, it was the cleanest water I swam in for any tri last year.  No one will mistake it for the Caribbean, but as long as you don't get heavy rains in the days prior to the race it won't be bad at all.

Good luck!

welcome...  i felt the same last year, but everyone told me that water was cleaner than some of the other local tri that we do.  So i signed up this year.  As long as it doesn't rain the week of you/we are in good shape, if it does rain, they will bail on the swim.

Welcome, that's great you registered for your 1st tri...
I'm new to this sport and i feel the same way about the Schuykill also...But I heard that it's pretty clean compared to other places you swim at. I was told they test the water so that should make you feel better.
This site is a load of information and support so don't hold back to ask any questions.
Good Luck!!!

I do open water swims in the Schuylkill around the end of May, beginning of June. Don't sweat it and welcome.

Welcome. I did it last year. The Schuykill smells a little bit and there's trash, but I could actually SEE my hand! My advice is to ride the course in advance. Those hills aren't pretty and the first comes just a mile out of the water. Good luck and hope it's not as hot as it was last year.

You folks who would swim in the Schuykil are brave. I rowed there for several years in college, and I (along with many others) was constantly ill. My teammates and I blame it on the "Schuykill Juice" or "Schuykill Fever."
Good luck! It IS a pretty river, despite it's filth.

Wow! Lots of Philly folks! I'm from just north of Philadelphia. I've had a little trouble finding sprints in this area.

Is there a website that has a couple?

Lots of races in the area!

In addition to using active.com or trifind.com, there are some other local races too.  Check out the Training & Who's Racing Forum for PA.  There's some links to local races in a sticky thread there.

I used to row in the Schuykill during college at the DAD VAILS. I was always told there were dead bodies floating around in there, haha.

Best of luck to you with that dude!

Hey getsome, what school did you row for?

Boneyard,

I rowed for Villanova '99 - '01 and won gold at Dad Vails as a frosh in the Freshman Heavy 8 division. And sophmore year, won in the Varsity Light 8.
How 'bout yourself??
That was a fun couple of years. Grueling... but fun.

I also swam twice in the Schuylkill last year and it was fine. I was surprised how clear it was. No second head growing out of my shoulder...yet. I'm also doing the Philly Olympic in June again this year (with about 1,800 others) so I guess that tells you how concerned I am about the water quality in the river.

As for a site to find local races I think trifind.com is the most comprehensive.

let me also add, if you are searching for a race in the philly area and you use trifind.com, make sure to click on New Jersey.  A lot of the races in the Philly area are help in New Jersey (south jersey)
