Okay - now you will TOTALLY see how much of a Newbie I really am! Here are some questions I have been wondering and decided that you all won't give me that look of "What a dumbie!!" to my face (go ahead and give the look, but I won't see it!)!! Ha! Here goes...

1. Does a person have to swim freestyle the entire distance? Or can he/she swim it any way possible?
2. Do you get disqualified if you get off your bike and walk (say up a hill)?
3. Can you walk instead of run/job during the 'run'?
4. What is the order of the events? Swim first? Run next? What?

I'm sure there is somewhere in this site (which I love!) that says all this kind of stuff - so where is it? Or should I just keep asking my silly newbie questions?

Thanks for your patience with me! Sue Ellen

Check out the USA Triathlon Web site (www.usatriathlon.org). They have all the rules and regulations listed.

Good Luck!!!

They are not silly questions...that is what this site is all about. You can swim any stroke....yes you can walk...the order is usually swim/bike/run, but there are some variations.

And yes, you can get off your bike and walk up a hill. Just stay out of the way of others!  There is a hill in a race here - 15% climb!  Ouch.

According to my BF, the rules state any forward moving stroke is acceptable on the swim. It's ok to walk the bike course, as long as you have your bike with you. But it's not OK to crawl on the run course. You have to be upright.

At the Wildflower Oly tri earlier this month, my BF says there was a guy running the bike course with his bike and wearing his bike shoes. He thinks the fellow must have blown a tire or "broke" his bike in some way and was unable to fix it but didn't want to take a DNF (did not finish). I can't even imagine running in those bike shoes (clop clop clop) and *then* running that horrid run course! Sheesh!

You CAN do any stroke on the swim. The only thing that you can't do is propel yourself in any way.

So whether it's the bottom or your hanging on to a surfboard of a lifeguard. You have to just let go and not push off.

You see lots of folks do the breaststroke to rest themselves a bit or to sight (if they are in open water). I don't think I've ever seen the butterfly (more power to you if that's your stroke of choice!!), but I've seen a few backstroke. Not often though, as it is easy to get off course or bump into hoards of people that way.

Also you should know that it is completely permissable to just float or tread water, if you need to.

Dana

Welcome to the sport!!

Ha - I swam competition in HS - don't think I'd ever ever EVER use the butterfly! Ouch!

Thanks everyone - this is giving me hope of AT LEAST finishing my first race (75 days to go!).

I love hearing the stories of what people have done or have seen. I can see myself in those shoes easily! Ha!

And if you get tired in the swim you are allowed to hang on to a surfboard, kayak or any other help vessel out there and not be disqualified. Just be sure (as mentioned above) not to "propel" yourself from the vessel -- just let go and swim from it.

You are going to love tri'n.

what I love about this site and what Ron and others have put together here is I have never, ever felt stupid or dumb about asking any question....and that has done so much to inspire me.

we were all newbies once...hell, I've only got one under my belt so I'm still totally newbie...and in some ways we all are, no matter how many races we've done...we're always learning something new about this sport and ourselves...which is, at least for me, why I'm becoming addicted to it...it's never boring, i'm always learning something new and it really is fun.

Funny that this came up...I timed myself in the pool yesterday and my lap splits doing back stroke were faster than doing freestyle! Then again, backstroke was my event in high school as well, but I'm just surprised that nearly 40 years later I'm still more efficient doing it. Still not sure I'd want to swim that way in a hectic tri event though!
