Subject: pump up tires every week?
I brought my beloved bike into the shop on Saturday for his one-week anniversary to get everything "tightened up" as instructed. Turns out my back tire was only at 30 psi (thought I was riding a little low...yikes!) when it had been 110 when purchased. The "bike guy" told me I should count on having to pump up the tires about once a week to keep them at the correct level. Do you check your tires before going out every time, weekly, other??

I check my before every ride.  Just part of my pre-ride routine!

Have been told to check them (by others who know far more than me) no less than once a week.

I have been told to pump them up before every ride.  I do, and I have a gauge on my pump that regularly tells me that they have lost 30 psi in a few days.  It apparently is not good for your rims or tires or your speed for that matter to be riding low.

Thanks. Sounds like I need to adjust my routine and check them before every ride. Can I confirm that 110 is the right pressure ?

You should check tires before every ride. My bike guy says tires can lose up to 8% of their pressure over night. Factor in heat, humidity, etc., and you could be riding on seriously low tires, which not only slows you down, makes your work harder, but it's also bad for the tires. I bought the best pump I could find with a gauge built right into it so I don't have to stop and try to check the pressure.

Thanks. I have an upright pump with a gauge built in so will check them now before every ride. What is the recommended pressure - is it 110?

My tires say 60-80 psi right on the tire. Maybe your tires have the needed amount on them too. I don't know where I would be without my many cheat sheets/tags.

110 is typical for standard road-bikes, but yes... check your tire. It should say it on there.

pump tires before and clean your chain after every ride.
low pressure slows you down
a dirty chain grinds up your cogs and chain rings.

Your tire pressure should be on the side wall of your tire.  Just spin it around slowly and you will see it.  Mine for instance is 120 psi.  I believe it depends on the tire you have and I also believe for road bikes you can see a wide range of tire pressures.  I just got a road bike so I am also relatively new to this.

I always put a pump to the valve before EVERY ride. check the side wall for correct PSI.

Okay, my tires are full of slime -whatever that is. Does that mean they are FULL of slime, as in, there's no air in there? Or does that mean I should still pump them up regularly and the slime is just an additive to slow leaks?

And how do you clean a bike chain?

Hi Andrea,

Your LBS might have put that slime in there to stop leaks, I have found that before.

I do not like it because it sometimes changing the tire difficult, because that stuff gets all over everything.

As far as the chain cleaning is concerned I use a no name magic lube that the LBS gives me.

I squirt de greaser on the chain and then get a hose and spray off the chain and then wipe with a cloth then apply the magic chain lube??

I think that any good quality chain lube will work check with the wrenches at your LBS.

Sounds like more work then it is :-)

Water bottle, Gatorade bottle, helmet in place, gloves (some times), check the aerobars and check tire preassure.

Keep it part of the routine. ;-)
