Subject: Racing wheelsets - everyday use?

I'm considering upgrading the wheels that came with my Felt S32 (ALX 220 wheels).  I'm thinking of something like the HED trispokes, or maybe some spinergy wheels, or something along that line. Are those wheels durable enough for everyday training use?  I'm training for IMLP, and do a ton of climbing around here, so I'd really like to get some lighter wheels that I can use for training in addition to racing - not sure if I can justify buying some pricey wheels just for racing use.  If it's germane to the durability issue, I'm 6 feet tall, and about 167 pounds. Suggestions?

i persoanlly wouldn't train on race wheels, regardless what they are.  Now you need to do some rides on them, especially just before the race so you aren't racing on unfamiliar equipment, but put the wear and tear on your training wheels.

Don't think about it as justifying having them by using them.  Look at it as the less you ride them, the longer you will have them, so it makes your cost/year of use much lower.

The HED trispokes are as durable as they get, as long as you don't crash them. So they could be used for everyday training, but the risk of ruining them in a crash would deter me.

Plus, one of the things about race wheels is the psychological advantage you get from them, and that is diminished if you use them all the time. On race day, they aren't something special.

Buy'um and ride 'um.

LWT wheels are a pleasure to train on.

I use a pair of AC 420s on my tri bike and and 350s for my climbing bike on the local hills. I am at both wheel's weight limits and have had zero problems with either.

The Hed's will be even better I suspect.

Just rememebr you break them you buy them.

I get real careful with my bike the last week or so before a race. Just so I have something to race on

Of course you can ride and train on race wheels all you want. They are typically better all around than beater/stock wheels.

Problem is that you have to weigh the risk of crashing and housing a $1500 set of wheels (or best case only one of the set).

Me? I used to train on my hand built race wheels when I road raced. But I also worked in a shop so I got wholesale pricing, and I built my wheels myself, so no need to pay someone to do it for me if I should break them. However, I did NOT train on my Spinergy's that I used on my TT bike. Didn't feel like having to replace them if I bit it on a training ride.

I will NOT be training all the time on my Zipp's if/when I get them.

Now I remember why I didn't sport the $1500 for Zips
I paid a bit less than $700 total for the 2 pair of new ACs.

I train on the ALX wheels that came with my Felt.

On race day, the Felt 404s go on.

A couple rides on the Felts, but 99% of it on the heavy ALX wheels.  It makes a huge difference mentally on race day, as noted.

Get the race wheels, they definitely will help, but I'd recommend keep training on the ALXs.

Thanks for the great replies all. Any suggestions for a good "middle of the road" wheelset that would be cheap/durable enough for everyday training but also decent for racing?

Somewhat related question - where is the line between a good training wheel and a race wheel? Is it defined by weight? Cost?

Uhhh, I just put that number out there ....... the retail for a pair of 808's is right around $1900.

Disclaimer: Not what I'll pay ......

Quality of materials, type of materials, weight, and most of all usually the hubs. And yes, cost. But there are over-priced p.o.s. stuff too, so cost is not as much of a factor.

I *highly* recommend Xero Lite XR-1s. I got a set last year, have over 2000 miles on them and they have not needed to be so much as trued. You can get them for less than 200 bucks, new, on e-bay. They have a decent aero profile and weigh 1520 grams for the set. I love these wheels.

Wow - I just checked out the xero wheels - they look great! At 1500 grams, how can they be so cheap?
