Visiting family in Mooresville today.  Went for an hour run.  Every runner I saw waved.  So did every cyclist.

Waved back!!!  Smile

This doesn't typically happen back at home.

Thanks!

Melanie,

Where in Mooresville did you run?

Along Brawley School road around 10:30-ish. Nice that there are sidewalks along the road. Seems to be no shoulders along many roads.

haha.  Southerners are a different breed.  I am reminded by this when we have our family get together in Ocean City, MD ever year.  I usually run 2-3 times when I am up there and last year, in maybe 20 miles of running, I got one wave...from a guy in a Duke hat!  Others don't even look at you!

90% of the time in the south you get a nod, smile, or wave from other runners (no comment on the cyclist tho).

I will definitely say in my limited experience down here that the athletes are indeed very friendly. I grew up in the Midwest were people were generally very friendly and then moved to Boston a bit over 2 years ago. A majority of the athletes I met were very friendly as well, but the people as a whole... not quite so much. Down here I've met a lot of friendly emails, and the athletes just seem to be the friendliest of the bunch. Met 3 super nice BTers Saturday at Shipwreck and had a great time overall.

Melanie,

That's my neck of the woods. We have been waiting 2 years for BSR to be finished. It opened (4 lanes) the first day of school this year. With the lake right here and smooth roads for biking, couldn't ask for a better place to live and train. If you come back be sure to eat at MILF'S.

The big, football-player-like looking guy running at a very VERY slow pace who waved at you...  twas me!

sitting here in my MD home, sipping Cheerwine & trolling for NC race / training info for times when I'm back home visiting my mom, and your post caught my eye. Sad to say, SO TRUE!

I haven't seen our buddy in a while (but then again I haven't bike commuted much in a while). Since his trial for assault with a deadly weapon, hopefully he is in jail or has calmed it down a little!

Yeah, except for those. I haven't experienced a whole lot of courtesy from drivers out in asheville.  I have been told I have to right to be on the road though...Course i was riding a bike, and caused him to have to slow down slightly.

I'm just across the SC border, but it's the same type of atmosphere.  I am so glad we were able to relocate to the Carolinas; these are the people I want my children growing up around.
