Subject: RE: strep throat Strep throat symptoms are usually fever & very sore throat and nothing else. No cough, sniffles, runny nose, sinus pain, etc. Strep throat needs antibiotics, not for the sore throat , but to prevent rheumatic fever which can folllow strep throat if untreated and cause heart valve damage. That's why doctors test for strep throat with swabs and cultures. The antibiotics don't do much to shorten the course of the illness though or help you feel better, but they do provide a great pshychological boost when you know it's strep and your being treated.
If your throat doesn't hurt, I wouldn't bother going to the doctor. If it does hurt, call him up, say "My daughters got strep, I have a sore throat, can you call in a prescription?"
Many people are carriers of the bacteria without being infected, so a throat culture without a sore throat doesn't mean much if it's positive.
Hope those random facts help. |
