OK, so I'm shopping online for an outfit to wear on my first tri in June. I had hoped to get some tri shorts, and I've got a pair on my wish list at TeamEstrogen.com, but $50 is a bit out of my budget.

I know why I don't want to wear bike shorts during the tri, but can I just wear regular running shorts? I'm worried about wicking and chaffing. My Brooks running shorts tend to rub on my inner thighs when they're wet.

What do you all suggest? Are there any other online shopping options? I've looked at SportsBasement.com, and Iron-Girl.com (now FlowerSports.com) and find the pricing fairly similar.

I bought a pair or running shorts at Sports Authority before my first 5k. They were ok, actually they were great since I was coming from wearing plain cotton shorts. Two weeks later I invested in a pair of Quintana Roo tri-shorts. I haven't worn my 'running' shorts since. The tri shorts are so comfortable that I can't imagine ever wearing anything else again. They go for about $42.

You should look at www.titanwear.com The tri shorts are great. I get the ones with the "gripper" legs. Also, the customer service is incredible.

Check out the following:

tri-zone.com
trisports.com
all3sports.com
endurancezone.com
supergo.com

That should get you started. Check the clearance and sales bins first.

good luck

If you can swing paying for the tri shorts, that would be ideal.  Your running shorts may cause you quite a bit of soreness on the bike.  I got a pair of Sugoi tri shorts for $30 on ebay (new).  Can't hurt to look!

Go to http://www.tri-zone.com/and look under the closeout section. You should be able to find something for about $30.

What's the difference between the Biking Shorts and tri-shorts? More or less padding? Shorter, longer?

Tri shorts have less padding, but it dries more quickly.  And you can run in them since they aren't so bulky.  They are the same length.

Actually most of the tri shorts I've seen are shorter than regular bike shorts. I know the ones I own certainly are.
