I have always been bad about stretching before I exercise but I have been told that I need to start stretching as I get older! Can anyone tell me some good stretches to do before I run or bike, or point me towards a link that has some?

Go to a few yoga classes, or pick up a yoga tape. You can do this on your off days.

I think it's best to stretch after working out rather than before.

I am on a 2-3 times a week routine (I like to stretch in the 90* program pool at the "Y" after swimming.

quads/ankles = grab foot by instep and touch heel to butt
hamstrings= foot on pool ladder or use side of pool as stretching bar
calf = wall pushes
shoulders= put one elbow in the crook of the other, grab hands and lower bopth arms together (poor description)
a few "toe touches"

I have gained 10 degrees of motion in my hip flexors and 15 in my hamstrings in a year. I got re-fitted for my new bike a couple of weeks ago, and the fitter was surprized. I can get into a better aero position now.

Thanks, that's the info I was looking for, although I always thought it was good to stretch before and after you work out. Do you do any sort of warm up before you start, or do you just go for it?

I'll often do some sort warm-up prior to my main set of whatever exercise I am doing, jog a little before running, do some swim warm/up before the main set, ride a couple of slack miles before cranking it out on the bike.

The way I look at it, stretching is a quality workout, like speed-work or strength training. I do it in small doses, carefully applied. Warm muscles are more readily worked. I wouldn't go to the track and start doing 400 repeats without warming up a bit first, the same with stretching. So far it seems to have worked.

Stretching after a workout, as I understand it, can be tough on your body since you're placing additional stress on muscles that just got put through stress. Ups the potential for injury. That doesn't mean to not stretch or do anything post-workout, but if you do, remember that less is best. Don't force any stretches or you'll end up injured. Same with if you're doing it pre-workout. If you're doing a couple sets of each stretch (probably not a bad idea), do the first one at about 50% and let your body adjust and work its way into it. Again, less is best.

I hate stretching, but am required to stretch daily for body maintenance and injury prevention. It sucks.

i take a yoga class once a week which helps keep me limber and makes up for the days i'm bad about stretching. this is what my yoga teacher told me - its best to warm up your muscles before stretching. run/bike/swim for 5 minutes, stop and stretch, then keep going. in reality, this doesn't always work out. so, i try to do some light stretching before i work out, never pushing too hard. if i do a warm up set in the pool, i stop and stretch after the warm up before i keep going. if i'm running and get stuck at a stop light, i take that time to stretch a little bit. for biking, i usually do a little before hand, and do more afterwards. i also try to do a few light stretches after running.

a GREAT dvd that has run, swim, and bike stretching routines is 'yoga conditioning for athletes'. the main yoga set is also excellent, and you can pick your focus to be flexibility, strength, or the two combined.

Stretching for flexability is hard, painful and it just p(l)ain sucks, but does wonders for your body. You have to get out of your comfort zone otherwise you aren't really doing anything useful.

this is at odds with what i've learned from the three yoga instructors i've had over the years. if it hurts, you should pull back a bit. it is good to challenge your strength and flexibility, but do so while respecting your body and its limits. it takes patience, but over time flexibility and strength both improve. i've always been pretty flexible, but my friend sara, who i've taken yoga classes with for the past 4 years, was not. after her first year of yoga, she was able to do so many things that before were impossible for her. it just took time, patience, and a gentle approach. even when i was in physical therapy, i was told not to push to the point of pain. maybe some mild discomfort, but never pain. pain is a message that something is wrong.

"pain" is subjective, call it "uncomfortable" if you want. But if you aren't stretching your muscles past your current ROM, you aren't going gain anything. Now there is certainly a limit on stretching but If someone is asking they aren't at that level. You have to push yourself and it's not going to be easy or pleasant.
