What is a good "beginner" bike for a triathalon for some one on a modest budget?

I don't have a succinct answer for you, but here are some tips to help you go to the next step.

First figure out WHAT your budget is. Modest is (unfortunately) too vague to answer your question. You probably don't need a bike with all the bells and whistles, but also you want it to be useful well into the next stage!

Go to a local bike shop and have them give you some advice. Tell them what your goals are, how often you hope to ride it and how many miles. There are general levels of bike technology, that have a corresponding jump in price. Ask what the meaningful differences are. Bike shops are VERY helpful. But don't go to a general sports store, go to a local business place.

Besides basic bike there are a couple of optional things you may want to think about, like clipless pedals. It will cost a bit less not to have them, but in the long run will it be worthwhile? Ask the bike shop person!!

Also here is a website that folks here LOVE!! Take a look and see if they have any helpful advice for you: http://www.bikesportmichigan.com/

Welcome!!
