Well, the Zipp 808's are now officially off my possible purchase list ........ I only got half of what I expected for a side job that I had done for a friend of ours for doing some design work for the house they are building. Sigh.

So my budget has been halved as well.

I'm looking at the HED Stinger 60's or 90's as my alternative choice. Anyone have any experience with them?? Good, bad, indifferent?

As far as pricing goes, they are literally about half the Zipps, and very similar in weight for 700c tubulars. I like the company and seem to think they would probably be the best choice. I've only got about $900 to spend now, so they look good for the price. I guess if there was some other mainstream brand that retails for around $1200 or less for a pair that I could entertain them as well if anyone has recommendations (first hand experience appreciated please). I still have to find out if my old shop can get the HED stuff. Gawd I'd hate to have to pay retail for wheels .......

I have Zipp's so I can't comment directly about the Stingers but when I was doing my research, I read nothing but good things about the Stingers. I'm a wimp and went with clinchers but if I was going tubulars, they are probably the wheels I would have bought.

They are about 40 grams heavier (oh no, what am I going to do!! ) than the 808's and have a slightly less deep section (for the 60 model), but they look really good for the price.

My old boss said he could get them but he said that a guy from the dua. team he sponsors really likes the Corima stuff too. A bit pricier, and a bit heavier. But still look nice. They only have the one aero model to choose from though.

I know you shot down a disc last time, but you could get a wheel cover for under $100 turning your training wheel into a disc.  Then you could get one 808 or 404 for the front if you want to stay with Zipp.  Maybe another side job next year can get you the other "half".  Or look out for a used Hed 3C on ebay.

I'm likely going to do something along these lines with a PT in the rear.

Check out the American Classic 58mm carbon tubulars.  They use Zipp 404 rims and AC hubs.  They are almost the same weight as 404s and aerodynamically the same as the previous Zipp404 without the dimples, but cost a bunch less.  I picked up a slightly used set from eBay with 2 brand new Tufo S3 Lite tires for $800.  I checked out the Stingers but I wasn't happy with the extra weight considering the other options.  Also check out the Hed H3c.  Zipp also has the new Flashpoint line of "budget" wheels so you can get a set of pseudo 404's for $935 from Trisports.com with the BT discount.

I did not really look that closely at the American Classic stuff (although I used to love their equipment back when I was road racing and had some of their stuff on my bikes). They use the Zipp rims, so would be nice.

I asked my old boss to get me a price on the Stingers with some Vittoria Corso Evo CS tires (their 170g TT tires). We'll see what kind of numbers I can get them at and then make my choice. I'm pretty sure I'm going to order that package, but we'll see.
