Subject: Eager in Riverside...
Hi there... I have been involved in "fitness" for a while now but the triathlon idea is new for me. I have decided that I want to do the Danskin event next month. My only question or concern is that I have only just started real training [for a week now]. I would appreciate any advice... should I be training for longer or is that a good beginner event? Since setting the goal, Ive been really psyched and feel that it has motivated my workouts again. Are there any training sites that I should check out? Thanks for the help!

Wow, next month is soon, but if you have a good base, it should be fine.  Start working on each of the 3 disciplines and do some bricks (2 of the sports, back to back).  Check out the main page of this website  www.beginnertriathlete.com for great advice!  I am also doing Danskin (Denver) and I hear it is a good beginner event. Good luck!

ideally, if u could reasonably do month 3 at http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/Programs/16wksprint2x.htm, that would get ya finishing.  i see the finishing results are anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours.  the last week would be a 'taper week' and you could combine a few workouts to simulate the swim to bike and bike to run transitions.

not knowing your prior fitness, GO EASY, take rests - do what u can for training, WALK IF NEEDED...dont try to run the whole time if you arent used to running - its cool to walk.  biking shouldnt be a problem at this distance.  of course, u will have to be able to do the whole swim without resting...but u could easily alternate strokes to your easy strokes.

good luck!

I have to agree with Ron in taking it easy and don't over do it.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback. I am working out with a friend and I only hope I will feel ready. I too am worried that it is SO soon. I havent done all the events at once yet and that will be the real test. If I feel that I cant do it with "pride" [I dont want to be carried at the end! : )], then I will wait. Whatever I decide to do, I will come back here for help and support... ;-)

dont try to do all the events at once at race distance before race day..that could hurt u more than helping at this point...if u can do all the distances without discomfort separately, then u should be ok...to simulate the swim/bike and bike/run, do a few of those together too as workouts (but not all 3) - but not at race distance - keep them shorter as around 60-80%.  if u can get up near the times/distance u need comfortably, then with a few shorter bricks, u should be ready for race day.

let us know your current swim/bike/run times and how difficult/easy it is and maybe we could offer better assistance.
