Subject: Hello from Ohio
My name is Matt and I will be running in my first olympic triathlon in June. I was very pleased to find this site because I knew there was specific training that I needed but wasn't sure where to go - until I simply Googled triathlon training. I have a lot of questions and I'm not sure if this is the appropriate thread to do this. The bottom line is that I am committed to the race in June and I have less than 12 weeks to train. Although I have been running and swimming, I have not been following the free 2x balanced 16 week since I was unaware of it. I'm not sure what to do with the program since it's a 16 week and I have less than 12. By now everyone reading this thread is probably saying "what's this guy smoking", which is understandable and probably deserved. I prefer Guinness anyhow... I just want to finish - I don't want to get hurt or be superman.

Welcome, Matthew. I'm up in NW Ohio. Which tri are you doing? Is it a Fat Rabbit or HFP race? There are a lot of awesome resources on this site and it's a great place to ask questions (in the triathlon forum) Assuming you're not starting from a zero base (i.e. not a couch potato) then you should be fine in 12 weeks.

Good luck and maybe I'll see you around.

Hi Matt,

Yes, what you're planning on is completely insane.

Welcome to the asylum, you'll fit right in.

If you can handle the volume, use the training plan as written, and start at week 5. Have you been keeping a log of your training? Do you know how much you've been doing the last few weeks?

Thanks for the warm welcome! It's a Fat Rabbit and it's in Findlay on June 10. I would not be starting from zero (but I have about 20 lbs. to shed). I've always been a runner. 6 miles is no problem - but after swimming and riding I'm apprehensive about the transition. I have been swimming for the last month because it's been awhile. I am a good swimmer but am a bit frustrated that I can only go around 200 yds. consecutively. I know I'm swimming too fast but everytime I try to slow down I get the feeling I'm sinking. Mental block? Biking - I used to ride a lot but have not been in the saddle for a long time. I'm borrowing my dad's road bike, which is getting tuned up right now. I plan to get on the bike Saturday if the weather cooperates.

Thanks marmadaddy for your support! My wife did say that I was insane... As a matter of fact, I started Month 2 week 3 of the free 2x balanced 16 week yesterday since I just found it the other day. I was not sure where to start.. the swim felt ok - obviously I took breaks but made it. I was tired but not dead. Am I jumping ahead of myself? I have not been in the saddle for a long time and I see that Friday I'm supposed to go 117 minutes - not sure about that one.

Ease into the cycling. You don't want to get injured by doing too much all at once.

Here's what I recommend. Do 30 minutes on the bike instead of 117. The next few bike sessions will be a gradual increase from there. If you start to feel any pain, stop. You're obviously looking to complete the race and not take home a medal (which is perfectly valid, it's what I do) so there's no point in risking injury.

As to your swimming, you have to learn to regulate your effort. The idea of the swim is to get through it and still be able to do the rest of the race. You won't lose much time, if any. You probably are sinking when you slow down and that's because you're using sheer lateral force to keep yourself afloat. Much better to do an easy slow 1500 than exhaust yourself every 200 yards and stop. It's not a good place mentally when you're out in the middle of the water.

Which event are you doing?

I know the organizers at Fat Rabbit and they are GREAT people and put on good events. The race in Findlay is different since they have two separate transition areas rather than one. That might be confusing if it was your first tri. Otherwise, Fat Rabbit always seems well organized.

Hey, mgr, welcome to the site. I'm a fellow newbie and Ohioan.

I'm planning on racing on June 4th at HFP racing's Deer Creek triathlon, near Columbus:

There's plenty of races in the area, though. Where are you at and what made you pick the findlay race?

thanks stupidnickname! One of my clients recommended it - he said the organizers do a great job. Plus I'm from Findlay so it's convenient.

Another Ohio welcome to you Matt!!!!!  I'm tucked way up in the far northeast corner of the state though.  I love the Findlay area for biking though.  I've been on a few tours out in that neck of the woods and rode GOBA one year when the ride went through Findlay.

Check out the logging feature on this site.  Keeping track of my workouts and blogging with others on this site has probably been the most motivational part of this whole triathlon process for me.

Good luck on your first tri.  My first tri will also be this summer in Ashtabula (unless I get brave and decide to sign up for the Youngstown triathlon in May).

Welcome to BT.  I just started training in January, and I just began my swimming training about 3 weeks ago.  You will get better as you swim more.

Starting slow on the bike makes since, 30-40 minutes then increase as you can.

I am thinking about doing Youngstown myself, then maybe another tri in July.  Likely Ceaser creek, then maybe going up to Bettylou's area for the Slyvania Tri in August.

Good luck
