So where do you guys do OW swims in Utah? Obviously I would like to stay in Utah Valley if I can, but I'm willing to travel occasionally. Do you guys know if swimming in Utah lake is ok? I guess I'm always afraid of finding a body or something in the lake, or coming out of the lake with some flesh consuming disease!

I hear you on Utah Lake. I'm sure the water is much more corrosive than the local pools.

In the summer, a few of us head up to Deer Creek, but we probably have to wait until end June/July before it's warm enough. It would be nice to find something that warms a bit earlier. Maybe the lake isn't so bad near the sheltered harbor, where the river comes in?

Maybe I'll check that out and let you guys know. I'm just interested in getting into the water so that I can get a feel for the open water. Thanks!

Been years- But I've spent quite a bit of time in Utah Lake, and that is when Geneva was still open.  I still have all my skin.

There are also a couple of smaller lakes around that would work well also.  One down by Santaquin somewhere I beleive.  THere is always Salem!

Deer Creek sounds great -- but better have your wetsuit!

Utah Lake should be fine.  Its shallowness and the fact there are 100 million (yes, one hundred million-I am not making this up) carp in it cause its cloudy water.  The carp are now being harvested and over time, that will help.  There are some nice beaches at Utah Lake.  That said, I do remember when the state park sold T-shirts that said "ski the scum".

I have done open water swimming at Deer Creek and it was fine.

I would agree that wetsuits help at Deer Creek. Even at the end of the summer, the water is only in the mid-60's.

And I guess Utah Lake isn't bad if you don't mind drinking carp excrement

Honestly though, Utah Lake looks worse than it is because it's so shallow. The worst problem is probably the danger of winds whipping up the water quickly, but the sheltered harbor should help with that.

I have to say that I'm anxious to get out into the open water. The pool is just not the same.

My usually reliable source of Utah Lake information may have been off by A LOT!  Sorry!

Now I don't know how many carp there are.

Here is an article about the lake in today's Provo Herald.

Hmm... thanks for the infor. Maybe we'll have to get together a few times for OW swims on the weekends during the summer.

Good article. I didn't realize the carp were damaging the lake that badly. And regardless of how many there actually are, they are planning on harvesting 1 million per year. That's a lot of sushi!

East Canyon is a good choice.

Carp for sushi?  I thinked it's better smoked.
