I started last year just wearing a t-shirt then switched to a tri top. I didn't want to wear the tri top underneath my westuit for fear of the zipper tearing the wet suit and I had a hell of time getting the top on when wet.

On that note, is it safe to wear a tri top with a zipper underneath a wetsuit?

It should be perfectly safe. If it truly is a tri top, it should have been designed to be worn under a wetsuit. I've never had a problem doing so.
