Subject: Single speed, rigid frame and running...what gives???
Tonight I did a super cool workout. It called for a 2 hour bike followed by a 10 minute run. I am sick of my trainer (2 hours on the trainer is tough!), and I'm a wimp on my road bike in the cold.

But for some reason, mountain bikign in freezing temperatures I find fun. But this time, instead of my mountain bike (with front suspension), I decided to do my first single speed trail ride, on my old, steel, rigid fork Bridgestone! It was totally awesome, I only had to walk a few very short (less than 50 feet) sections, except for one long downhill down a "spillway" for a new residential area that was strewn with 6" square sharp edged rocks.

Anyway, I went on my 10 minute run afterwards, which was naturally, very close to a mile, and it actually took me 10:42. So calculating my pace on my 10 minute "non-brick" run after a 2 hour difficult, single speed mountain bike ride... I was FASTER than during my 5K last weekend?!!!

Granted, the brick was flat, the race was hilly, today I've had 2 full days of leg rest, prior to the race, no days of leg rest. But still...

What gives???

Is my body holding back on me? Is my brain playing tricks on me?

Maybe not so wierd...

According to this calculator, 10:42 is pretty darn close to my prediced 1 mile pace based on a 5K race of 35:17.

Single-speed mountain biking is amazing. When I lived in CA, I used to race my SS and after a year of riding it almost exclusively I had more power and better bike handling skills than ever in my life. Plus, there's something about cruising singletrack silently...no chain slap, no clicking gears. It's awesome.

mtn biking generally is good for the soul! (It is my absolute favorite.) And yeah, great when it's cold. I have not (yet) built up a single speed, but my b/f has--and has done a few races on it--and finds it just awesome. So I guess you were uplifted--well, and that and your training with good rest is paying off!

have fun on that bike. single speed bridgestone sounds way cool. mmmm.

We mountain bike throughout the winter... It beats the hell out of riding the trainer.
