I've never ridden a fixed gear bike, but some talk about them as if they're the holy grail, or the "purist's"bike.  Another friend who rode one for a almost 2 years said that they just busted up his knees really badly.  Joint problems galore from riding one around Seattle.

He's on a regular road bike again.

Think twice, then think again.  That's my suggestion.

Let C be the correct number of bikes to own
Let N be the number of bikes you currently own

C=N+1

There you go. You're welcome

single speeds are fun. my single is a motobecane, but its my dad's old road bike which we converted.

funny. bill just did a web project for a new bike shop, and instead of being paid in cash, i told him he should get paid in bike. now we're actually even for once - 5 bikes each

NFW.  FIVE bikes EACH?!?!  Let's hear the inventory.  I'm up to two but one's definitely a beater old MTB.

You people are going to get me into trouble. About 5 years ago, I downsized from two road bikes and three MTBs to just one road and one MTB.

Yeah, but I raced a single-speed MTB for about a year when I lived in CA, and could climb just about anything on it. I had more power then than I've ever had before or since, and my knees were just fine.

Don't forget, you may not have suffered from OMD (old man disease) back then.  Not saying you do now, but OMD is a silent and insidious virus that can attack otherwise healthy joints at the slightest hint of overstress.  It may be tomorrow.  It may be 5 years.  It will happen though, and it's licking it's chops at the thought of you pounding your way up a hill on that fixed gear bike.

On the road...no velodromes here in Augusta. The cool thing about this bike is it has a flip-flop hub that easily converts b/w fixie and freehub.

first, we only have one car. the bikes make up the difference.

me: a bianchi denali mountain bike (gathering dust), a gary fisher hybrid (for burley pulling), a bianchi veloce (for training and tris), a motobecane single speed (old), and a dunelt 3-speed (old - ride a wheel on sheffield steel!)

bill: bridgestone mb-3, surley cross-check (which he just build up himself, since his frame size isn't available pre-built), rivendell redwood, raleigh fixed gear (for commuting), and a raleigh 3-speed

Screw you, buddy.

OK, here's another plan.  You buy the bike and I'll take the B2 off your hands.  I'm jonesing for one anyway.  Your bike census remains the same.  Your wife is happy.  I'm happy.  And, since you oppose discussion of OMD, you'll be fine on the fixie and you'll be happy to.

There, problem solved.

editors note:  I think I read somewhere you've got a B2.  If I'm wrong, whatever you had in your magazine cover avatar will do.

Oooh, that's too bad. The velodromes are fun.

Buy it! So I guess you'll be getting it with the brake then?

Yep...it's a B2. And I'm keeping her. IMFL on a fixie? That *is* an interesting idea...

haha, that's funny, my better half just did a bikeshop website...we talked about getting paid in bikes. I desperately want a tri bike and this shop has been really good to the two of us (Pat bought both his road bike and his comfort bike there and I bought my beloved Raleigh Grand Sport aka Ruby there). Here's their new site: http://www.ambridgebikeshop.com/

DO IT, Jim!  That's a sweet ride for the price. It's almost as if you can't not afford it!

I converted my old mtb to a ss/fg flip-flop. I commute on it every now and again and always get the inevitable "how do you shift?" questions.

You probably wouldn't be the first. A guy did IM Canada on one a couple of years ago. Anyway, I say go for it. You can't have too many bikes, and nothing like a fixie. Glad to hear you're not buying that OMD crap either. I know plenty of people in there 50's and 60's still riding fix.
