HI!

I am a newbie from Northern Virginia. I was a competitive swimmer from elementary school through college. I pretty much got burned out and finally my competitive juices are flowing again....

Now I am planning and training for 5!!! triathlons (1 per month) this summer. It seems like alot but I love the feel of racing.

I have been focusing my training on the bike since my swimming is still pretty strong and I have been running all winter. I bought a trainer 2 weeks ago, and that has really helped get some more time on the bike.

Now my biggest dilemma is whether or not to buy a triathlon specific bike????????

Hi shelly. welcome to the site and the sport. It looks like you've got your season pretty well planned out, which is great. Training with races and goals in mind is easier than just trying to log the miles. As far as buying a new bike, it really depends on a few factors... first, what kind of goals do you have for yourself this season? Are you riding on a bike that you are comfortable with now? Do you have a few thousand sitting around to spend?Maybe you should do a few races first, make sure it's something that you want to continue with, and then make a decision. Oh, and since you've been swimming since you were 6, you think you could teach me to do flip turns?

WELCOME and a heck of a first tri season you have planned with 5 races.

As for the bike thing....I'll agree with the thought of giving it a season perhaps to make sure tri's are what you want to make a commitment to to justify $1200+ for a tri bike.

I've seen plenty of people riding mountain bikes for their first races.  I ride an 1990 Trek road bike with aerobars attached.

Take your time on a big bike decision.

Have a FUN race season.

Ty

Thanks!!!

I agree. I need to wait a bit before I shell out the bucks for a new tri bike..

I have promised myself to wait until at least June to buy a bike (finish at least one triathlon first...)

GO GMU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(can you tell I am a bit excited????)
