Subject: Beginner question on diff btwn spin bike and stationary bike
I'm a tri newbie - just started training two weeks ago for my first sprint. For the bike sessions, my training plan says to use a spin bike. I know that these have a more realistic 'motion' than computerized stationary bikes (upright ones), but is it OK to use a regular stationary bike some of the time? My gym has many more lifecyles than spin bikes.

Thanks!

Sure, that's fine. If it's your first tri and you're coming from a background that's "somewhat less than an elite athlete", you'll see fitness gains from pretty much any cycling activity.

I'd advise against using either in your sprint.

I just started biking for real - on the road. I was using a stationary at the gym until I found a bike. It is kind of obvious, but I didn't realize how completely DIFFERENT it is. On a stationary, you can wiggle all around and do all sorts of things that there's no way you can do when you're really riding. I'd recommend getting out on the road ASAP to get used to it.
