I was wondering if anyone out that has done a sub 6 hour bike in an Ironman would share their training plan for the 16 weeks prior to the IM?
Thanks
Chris

Not that I've done this myself, but I'm guessing those that can do this, *without* blowing up for the run have spent a lot more than 16 weeks getting there.

What kind of shape are you in now?  Do you have any 1/2 IM times to use as a starting point ( going off the assumption this would be your first IM )?

I have been working out all winter, and this will be my 3rd IM. I am in the 6:30 range right now for an IM and close to 3:00 on a half.
From what I have seen online I think I answered it myself, medium distance( 30 to 50 miles) several times a week at race pace and a long ride on the weekend for endurance.
I will let you know how it works out
Thanks
Chris

I went just under 6 hours at CDA last year.  No real training plan, just rode lots.  Feel free to look thru my log from last year.

Can you go out right now and ride 112 miles in 5:45 (19.48 mph)?  That's moving pretty good, and if you can over the specific terrain of the IM course, then you might have a chance.  I might be able to do a 6:00 IM in Florida...Lake Placid is probably a pipe dream.  Speed lost on the uphills can't be totally regained on the downhills.

A lot will depend on the course.

Ride lots is good advice.  I rode lots last year, and while I didn't do an IM I put out a 2:45 1/2 IM bike split ( and was well within myself, and still able to run the entire run on a very hot day ).  I'll be doing more of the same this year, as I work up to IMWisco.

I'd suggest that you've got a good idea there of a couple rides during the week, and a long ride on the weekend.  I'd also suggest that one of the shorter rides during the week to rider harder than race pace, really push it.  The other big thing is consistency.  Stick to that plan for several months, and it'll really pay off.

There's a wealth of good training info here and on other sites ( Gordoworld is another ).  If you're a member here, there's lots of training plans.

Good training!

I've been sub 5:30 before, and the best advice I can give you is focus on the long rides (95++) and try to do them without a group (aka drafting) and with as little stopping as possible. You won't be drafting or stopping in the race, so remove those crutches in training. The other thing I would recommend is to really work on your base/aerobic capacity. You use very little anaerobic/speed in an Ironman (If you start sprinting at some point on the IM bike ride then you will have much bigger problems than I could address here) so keep the high end interval work to a minimum.
