My understanding is that yes, there are different types of kayaks for different things. I have used sea kayaks before. They tend to be longer, and a little more stable.

Places to go......I would say any place like REI, or EMS would be a good starting point for buying one. Beyond that, if there's any groups that do adventure racing in your area, they would be the best people to talk to.

At your service.

Based on your location, I'm guessing you're interested in sea kayaking, not white water.

You would be looking for a touring or surf kayak.  (or maybe a fishing kayak.)  In general, you'll be looking at long narrow boats. The short stubby ones are for river running.

http://www.paddling.net is a good place to start.

I went in Montery last year. It was a lot of work....

Plus all the sea otters kept getting in the way, you may not have that problem in Tampa bay

Did you club them with the paddle? I hear that helps. Wait, no, that's baby seals. Sorry.

You might want to send lobstergirl a note and ask her, I believe she's a kayaker and in fact had one for sale on the board here.

I have a 16.5 Janautica--it's long, sleek, tracks true and it's RED. Also fiberglass and heavy as hell.  I like it, though--great for ocean, sound and creek, which is what I do. Depending on the water where you are, you're gonna want a spray skirt, too. Then there's the car rack, the paddle, the vest, the dry bags.  See, a sport and MORE GEAR TO BUY. Woo!

I've also used Neckys, which are plastic. Not bad at all, but I like mine better.
