Subject: Question for PowerTap owners

I've always wondered this.  Do you have the hub built into a race wheel and train on it regularly?  I know a lot of people save their race wheels until the race so I was wondering what you guys did in that regard.

And if my wife is reading this, NO I'm not thinking of buying one (yet).  Just wondering.

Two hubs...

If I had to go for one though I would put it on a training wheel rather than a race wheel.

i currently have mine built into a mavic open pro but when i have funds available i'll be having it rebuilt into a zipp 404 clincher (or something similar). a couple of guys in my tri club have done that and have had no problems with the wheels. they say they are quite durable.

Had it built it into a sturdy (32-spoke count) training wheel and bought an aero cover to use for racing.  This effectively turns it into a disc for an extra $70 or so.  Just got it and used it this past weekend.  Seemed to work quite well.

PT Pro built into the Mavic Open Pro rim for training wheel.

PT SL built into a zipp 404 for racing.

There went my budget for the whole year.  Ooops!    Well worth it though, IMHO.

Heck, the Open Pro wheel is damn nice.  Even with the PT Pro hub it's about the same weight as the big heavy wheel I did all my racing on last year.  No need to get two complete sets of wheels if you don't want to.

You saw mine at the Texas Tri, if you can remember it. PowerTap SL built into a 28-hole Mavic CXP33 with CH Aero Wheel cover. Wheel built and cover cut to fit by Rich at wheelbuilder.com. A pretty bomb-proof wheel that easily converts to a disk when needed.

I've been using it for all races and training since I got it last October. No issues. The 28-hole is plenty sturdy for me, since I'm not a Clydesdale and I'm running 650's.
