Well, a few months ago I got into the wonderful world of satellite radio and discovered electronic "chill" music (also called triphop, I think). Bands like Massive Attack, Etro Anime, Radiohead, Coldplay, The Postal Service, Telepop Musik etc. are featured on this station, and it's a breath of fresh air next to the Top 40 Charts music every local station plays.

For a change of pace, I also like Blonde Redhead (kind of alternative-y), AFI (rock!), and club dance-y stuff like Armin Van Burren (sp?) and whatnot.

And there will always be room for my favorites Tool, A Perfect Circle, Tori Amos, Sarah MacLachlan, etc.

I recommend satellite radio, Sirius especially, for those stateside (is it available outside of the US?).

I love threads like this because it's great to see the musical differences caused by the generation gap. I have to admit I've never heard of any of the groups that you mentioned! I did recently buy a Limp Bizkit CD because I liked their cover of the Who song "Behind Blue Eyes". I put it and a couple others on my MP3 player and gave the CD to my 22 year old son who about had a coronary when he saw what his 55 year old Dad was listening to. Other than that my music consists of stuff from the 70's so I won't bore you with bands that you've never heard of either!

Train is my absolute favorite, so there is plenty of that on my mp3 player. I tend to put "noisier" alt-rock songs on too, for training, such as Linkin Park, Hoobastank, Creed, Default, etc. And for a change of pace, there's some Barenaked Ladies, Journey and Hall & Oates thrown in there too.

My "crap, here's another hill and my legs are dying" track is "Far Behind" by Candlebox. On sluggish days, I just put that one on repeat. LOL

My turn to chime in. I love Nickleback-figured you out...ELO-fire on high...Golden Earing-radar love...Christina Aqulara-fighter,Queens of the Stone Age-no one knows...Eminem-slim shady and with out me

Albums are anything by No Doubt, Metalica and Talking Heads

Yes I know that includes just about everything but country and clasical, but Wagner, Orf and Bach will have to wait for the next list.

I'm partial to angry white boys and their resultant music... I favor Linkin Park, Disturbd, Trapt, God Smack... anything I can play loud and sounds mad. (!)
I **also** like Nelly... some of his songs are pretty groovy and funky...

I recently bought the new Eric Clapton CD "Me and Mr Johnson" though I'm just as likely to listen to the complete Robert Johnson CD with all the original songs on it. Then of course there's Son House, Charley Patton as well. I like Peter Gabriel alot too.
Then I do listen to Radiohead, but sometimes they are just too darned cheerful for me . I also heard some Keane recently. They didn't sound too bad.
But the ultimate rush for me music wise, still after 25+ years is Ommadawn by Mike Oldfield. if the finale to part one doesn't get the Adrenalin flowing then you're lifeless.

Distillers, Rancid, old No Doubt, BreakHall Dancers, any of the music from the Punk Comps that you can get for 3 bucks! Drop Kick Murphy. Punk tunes help me keep up my pace and spirit while training, horns and drums are great!
Clutch Grabwell - a boston local band they are great for endurance spin in the studio.
OutKast - Roses - a great song with a great beat. There are like 4 songs on the Love Below album that keep me motivated.

Come on Eileen, I want you to want me, you know fun stuff!

Currently on the Mp3 player: Dire Straits, Meatloaf, Vanhalen, U2 (reflects my age.)

For night jogs and walks on the track - Old time radio shows (does not reflect my age)...fills in for missed television.

This is such a great thread. I am awed at my cheeks as they raise in surprise as I put call sign name to music. I never in a million years would imagine that Mad Max listens to Limp! Wow! How cool. Well continuing the busting the stereotype train I have been on a Metallica fettish for the last three weeks. Black album of course. The best. I used to listen to just the first seven songs but found I like #10 with a vengence. BEST RUNNING MUSIC EVER WOO HOO!  As I am a true RB fan with a hint of house I love anything that Verve Records puts out. Right now I'm listening to their house/hip hop versions of such classics as Nina Simone's "Feeling Good," and "Strange Fruit", as well as a souped up Summertime. Also on a Miles kick with Sketches of Spain swirling around. And last but not least ANY SOUNDTRACK FROM A QUENTIN TARRANTINO FILM. Quentin hits my 1970s spot with a bullseye. He's my generation all kung fu, disco and sexy blackexploitation. Gotta' love it!

Lots of angry boy music is being posted!
I'll throw out angry girls Sleater-Kinney as a female alternative. They're a bit of punk and rock-n-roll I suppose. No matter what, they're great!

Angry Germans also make me run faster - Rammstein's my fave. They growl a lot.

There is definitely a varied array of tunes listed. I can be all over the scale, but for the couple of months it has been this band out of Massachuesetts (sp). "Waltham"-Permission to Build. They are a bit of a 80s rock with an alt. sound. I can't keep it out of my CD players-car, gym, office. You can hear samples or buy the album at amazon.com. Other than that I listen to:

-Andrew WK -AC/DC
-Bizkit -Pink Floyd/Jimmy Buffett (for longer duration activities)
-New Found Glory -Candlebox
-Fenix TX -Offspring

Preferably something that rocks and has good intensity.

remember I am from north of 49, so you may not recognize these artists...sarah harmer, holly mcnarland, BNL...and a generous helping of counting crows...I try to get live music, if possible, does anybody else find that makes you go much faster?

Time for the "old guy" to chime in with his musical tastes. My first love is classical music, especially Mozart but I also like Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Haydn, etc. Jazz has some classical pieces and I also like Charly Parker, Fats Waller, Thadeus Monk (sp?) and a few others. Then there are the singers such as Pavarotti, Frank Sinatra, Charles Aznavour, Salvatore Adamo, Nana Mouskouri, Mireille Mathieu, Edith Piaf, Andrea Bocelli, and Leonard Cohen.

I'm waiting patiently for my ipod mini to ship (pink ), and collecting songs from itunes. I just downloaded REM's The Great Beyond (I've already pulled my old 80s favs from the chart lists!). I also love another north of 49 band called Moxy Fruvous (bouncy, good for running, lyrics are brilliant, especially if you can tolerate some very liberal politics and conservative bashing-they have an entire song about Rush Limbaugh that is hysterical!), and some alternative singles-elbow's Not a Job, The Shins' Pink Bullets, and I confess to enjoying P.I.M.P. (the clean version-where you can only hear every other word), and Black eyed Peas' Hey Mama.

I'll have to check out the bands everyone is recommending!
