Is this the same thing as a "tumble turn"?

That probably better describes my "flip" turns...

There is also a video you can download and watch that breaks down the flip turn steps, if memory serves.  My short term memory is limited as I suffer from O-2 deprivation from flip-turning myself right to the bottom of the pool.

I tried one of those yesterday just for the h3ll of it and I still have water sloshing around in my sinuses if I turn my head just right.  I think the water level went down when I got out because all the water I carried off in my head.

You probably figured this out already... but it's always best to blow air out your nose during the flip turn.

I learned from a book and I have a bad habit of only reading what I deem to be the important points.  Apparently I skimmed over that one.

I think that is one of the most important parts.  I have been doing flip turns for a long time and I still forget, which causes me a lot of grief.

that's weird....  I must do it now without thinking about it, because I don't notice, but I swear I don't blow out during the flip and I never get water in my nose.  I do maintain constant foreward motion though... Very little pause when I set my feet to push.

They are the same as tumble turns then (that's what we call them here in the UK).

Do you think it's important to be able to do them?

Well if a "tumble turn" is where you do a forwards flip when you get the wall... and push off after the flip... then yes, it's a flip turn.

Are they important? Naw. In a pool swim tri you can't get one in at the wall, and in the open water you don't need to do one.

before I learned to do them, I said they weren't important.  Now I know how to do them, I say learn how.

Every time you do an open turn, you get a chance to take a big breath. It's like a quick break every 25 yrds.  I find it much better to do the flip turns and keep my rythem going.

Since learning to flip turn, I have noticed an increase in my strength and endurance.  They are defineatly worth learning to do

I'll agree with Vortmax on the benefits for breathing and endurance. Flip turns can be hard to do initially, mainly because you've got to stay under water a bit longer and forego that big gulp of air at the end of the pool. The payoff is real, however.
