Subject: Am I kidding myself with Half Iron?
Hello there..

Having finished a sprint tri in 02 at Sea Bright, NJ (last one to get out of water!), workout bug bit me. Following year, trained & finished NYC marathon ~5hrs.
This year I am hoping to get better in biking & next year swimming..

Coming to the point, I am considering a relay (bike & run myself) to do 1/2 Iron on Sep 25 in VA. I can do half marathon fairly comfortably & 25 miles on a bike (not bricks).
Given this time of 16 weeks, can I just finish 1/2 iron or am i kidding myself?

BTW, i am 41. I can not spend anymore than 7-8 hrs of training a week (with 2 kids, that's the most i can afford).

Thanks in advance for your support & valuable suggestions,
ram

So someone else will do the swim?  In that case - I think you will have no trouble!  You are already doing lots with running and biking - seems like if you do some longer bikes and brick workouts, you'll be just fine!

Good luck!

You know you can run a marathon...so you have the endurance....you just need more time on the bike, and some brick workouts and you can definitely do it in that amount of training time...have fun!

Almost four months, you can do it. I would concentrate on two or three workouts a week. A long bike(and I mean Long) and a brick( maybe once every other week, and a long run the off week). If you can bike 25miles now, I would try 27 to 30 on your next long bike. and 30 to 35 after that. You may half to bend the 10% rule. Because you have the run down, you won't have to add as much there. I think about it like this you are adding 0% to the run and 15 to 20% on the bike that averages to 7.5 to 10% overall. Make a plan to be at 56 to 60 miles about two weeks before the race. Write down how far the long ride for each week will be. See if you think you can make it. good luck.

Guys & Gals,

Mucho Thanks for all the support and encouragement!

I did it. Instead of Sep 25, We chose Delaware Diamond man for two reasons. Flat & Close to home (only 2hr drive).

My buddy did swim part (actually it turned out to be a 5M run due to issues with water in the pond) and I
did Bike & Second leg of Run.

Bike course was excellent. Mostly flat, except couple of hills in the entire 56M route.
Run course was a bit hard. It was gravel road for ~8miles. Since all my training was either on asphalt
or Thread Mill, this threw me off balance. Walked along the way, but did it!! and am here sitting with a finishers medal.

Thanks again.
