I hauled myself out of bed early this morning to get a swim in before work. I managed to eat a banana after putting in my contacts, and headed out the door to the pool. Drank some water when I got out of bed, and again before getting in the pool, but still felt that a.m. dehydration, and even had a bit of a mild headache while swimming, though it went away as soon as I got out of the pool.

For those of you who do this on a regular basis, do you drink while you are swimming? Pound more fluids as soon as you get out of bed? Just before swimming? I'm not an early riser by nature, so I don't think I'll be getting up extra early just to hydrate any time soon.

TIA!

I find that hydration the day/night before an early morning workout is important.  If you wait to hydrate right before your workout it might be too late.  Try hydrating the day/night before and see if that helps.  And congrats on swiming in the am!!  Not everyone can get up and hit the pool first thing in the am!

Also try having a glass of fruit juice/gatorade before your morning w/o to avoid low blood sugar

I don't drink a lot prior to swiming, but I do try to take a water bottle with me to the pool.  I will drink between laps, partly to get the pool water out of my mouth.  If you are thirsty, then I would make a point of drinking.

I agree with runnergirl above.  The only thing I have before swimming is a glass of OJ.  I don't drink again until I'm finished swimming.

I also find that I get thirsty while swiming. This morning, I had about 4-5 oz of juice and half a bananna before leaving the house. On the way to the pool, I had half a chocolate chip Odwalla bar. I also had a water bottle with me-and I only swam for about 30 minutes.

*I've recently started drinking juice before am workouts, and it's really nice-refreshing! I drink a pineapple-orange juice.

This morning I had a glass of water and a banana, ran for 20 min, had a glass of water, swam for one hour.
Sometimes I'll have a cup of OJ if I need some sugar, or an energy drink if I'm feeling really sluggish.
Note: I tend to drink a lot before bed and have a glass of water on my nightstand.

When I swim in the early morning, I just drink about 8 oz of water and go to the pool. I can workout on an empty stomach with no problems for an hour. Sometimes I'll set aside a water bottle on the deck, but usually not. I'll just drink afterwards. But I also keep really well hydrated throughout the day, which may contribute to my ability to not have to drink while swimming

I tend to get headaches after swimming if I don't drink and stretch my neck after swimming. This morning I took about 16 oz of water with me for a ~2000 yard swim, and I had worked my way through it by the time I got back in my truck to go home.
