Master 1938 La Crosse | Subject: Help with zip ties, computer cable? Okay, I'd like advice on whether and how to clean up the cyclocomputer cable that the LBS installed on my new bike. As you can see in the pic, the computer cable descends from the aerobar mount off screen to the top left. The cable is then wrapped loosely around the rear brake cable, then it is zip-tied to the frame and follows the bar down. That black band on the frame is a black zip tie. What I'd like to do is to: A) cut off some length of the computer cable so it wouldn't have as much excess. SOOOOOoooooo . . . is this a good idea? Bad idea? Did the LBS do a rush job on this? Do all computers get attached like this? Am I being overly anal and OCD? Opinions wanted . . . (CycloCompCable.JPG) Attachments ---------------- CycloCompCable.JPG (95KB - 25 downloads) |

Pro 4206 Los Angeles, CA | Subject: RE: Help with zip ties, computer cable? The wrapping around the brake cable is ugly. I did mine myself and here's one idea (similar to what I did): 1. Take off the cyclocomputer for now. 2. Unwrap the wiring off the brake cable. 3. Starting from the frame, where the zip tie is. I used black electrical tape from there on. I ran the wire up the spacers, along the stem, along one of the aerobars, until I got to the computer mount. All the wiring was held down by the tape. Not everywhere, just strategically place it. Everything like stem, aerobar, etc. was pretty much black and it seems like that on yours too, so no one will be able to tell. 4. At this point, there will be excess wiring. Attach the computer on the mount, and start wraping the wire around the area where the computer and mount attaches, so that no one can see it, until you can't wrap anymore (hardly any excess left).

Extreme Veteran 494 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: Help with zip ties, computer cable? well, I didn't have the LBS do it, I did it myself, but here is what mine looks like. Upon second glance of yours, the cable being wrapped around the rear brake cable looks bad. I have mine wrapped around the front d. cable and there is hardly any excess cable. Mine actually looks quite slick to me w/o going the wireless route. Edited by runpuddrun 2006-04-25 7:59 PM (IMG_0469.jpg) Attachments ---------------- IMG_0469.jpg (54KB - 19 downloads) |

runpuddrun - 2006-04-26 12:33 AM two words. college student. Yeah, two words: college professor. So I'm already breaking the budget with the new bike, believe me. No wireless. Besides, wouldn't wireless be pointless and overkill on a bike that still has external cable routing? Once max's wireless idea is dealt with, I believe that we have four proposals on the table: 1. My original idea, involving zip ties and cutting the cable to the correct length. BUT what about this: Stake - 2006-04-26 6:49 AM I don't know if they rushed it or not, but it looks like crap. Do not cut that wire. Never? I can never cut the wire? Is it really all that bad to cut to fit? |

Extreme Veteran 494 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: Help with zip ties, computer cable? 1. You can't cut the cable. It would ruin your cyclo-computer. 2. I only use electrical tape for my aerobars, and for bar tape. but it's your bike. 3. It would work in your case b/c you have the same exact bike as me, cept a year later. I just use electrical tape to tape my front and rear derail. cable to the end of my aerobars. then, you can just wrap the wire as close to them as needed w/o having it look like crap. 4. in stakes case, you still have loose wire's, which I don't like, but again, its your bike. good luck |

Champion 8903 | Subject: RE: Help with zip ties, computer cable? Well I only toss it out on the table in the chance that someone might not have already purchased a computer. My Cat Eye Cordless-7 wireless is minimally more than a wired unit. The newest 10 function model is currently on sale at Bike Nashbar for $35...a 20 dollar savings over the $55 original retail. Mine works flawlessly. Here's the link: Edited by max 2006-04-26 10:31 AM |

The wires for a cycle computer are incredibaly tiny, think 3-4 strands of hair, I have attempted to repair wires that got cut in a crash, but I have never had any success. |

Nice clean job Stake. Will have to keep this in mind for a rainy afternoon. |

The wires for a cycle computer are incredibaly tiny, think 3-4 strands of hair, I have attempted to repair wires that got cut in a crash, but I have never had any success. Check. Okay, that helps clear things up. So, it's less like cutting and crimping a speaker cable to length, and more like being asked to splice a USB cable or something equally twiddly. Got it. Looks like I'm going to try a modified stake solution. I'll post results when I'm done. Or, if it looks worse than when I started, I won't post results at all. |

Master 1938 La Crosse | Subject: RE: Help with zip ties, computer cable? As promised, here's the repaired cyclocomputer cable porn. Sigh. That's just sad. I moved the computer mount from the aerobar, where it was mounted at 90 degrees from normal, to the handlebars, tucked right under one of the elbow rests. I went for a ride with it yesterday, and I like it a lot. I don't have to move my elbow to read it, and neither do I have to turn my head 90 degrees. I pulled a stake on the cable itself, wrapping it not-too-tightly and zip-tieing it at either end. Thanks, all! If you get tired of your computer being under your arm rests, you can get one of these to mount it on your aerobars: http://www.all3sports.com/product_info.php?pName=profile-design-universal-computer-mount |
