Subject: Hi from sw Georgia - long
I wanted to say hello, stop lurking and start participaing on the board. I'm a 44 year old dad to three living in a rural area. I started training about 6 wks ago when my wife finally persuaded me to come run with her during her prep for the Danskin Orlando tri.
I ran distance in high school, fairly well, but quit before college. I have always loved the water, and though I have never swam competitively almost all my PE's in college were swimming related, even earned a WSI certificate, and I did do some fitness swimming off and on for a few years. As far as cycling goes, I rode a dept store 10 speed until I got a drivers license - even rebuilt it once, but that's the extent of my cycling experience.
I did take up rowing for about 6 months on a club level eight about 20 years ago, got in decent shape, did one race and that was it. Since then I have been much more focused on family and career, and numerous passing hobbies. While not exactly a slug, I have been far from physically fit.
Now that I have a goal in mind - I am enjoying the training again. I just needed the proper motivation, and as far as mid-life crises go I suppose taking up triathlon is better than most other kinds of trouble I could get into. The swimming is good though slow. Training on the bike is great, but I hate the run. Probably because i used enjoy it and run well. Now the run is killing me, its beating up on one of my knees if I'm not careful, and I feel like I'm crawling along at 10 min/mile. I hope it will get better with time.

Now that I've said hello, you can expect a lot of questions I'm sure. Good luck to all on their upcoming races.

First question: Which screen name would be better TriPappy (TriDad is probably taken) or FastandDirty (My wife's way of poking fun at my Obsessive Compulsive tendancies)?

Welcome to BT!

I like "DarrellC." There are enough 'tri' screennames.

Good luck with your first race!

Howdy! My wife is from West Point, GA. My in-laws live in Auburn. If you're doing West Point Lake Oly in July we'll see you there.

Southwest Georgia? That's a lot of area to cover . I lived in Albany growing up.
That's awesome that your wife encouraged you to tri - a bit of friendly competition! As for running, I've found that glucosamine helps with knee pain. You'll have to get into running slowly. Try not to overdo it. And have fun!

Thanks, for the kind replies. SW Georgia form me means Bainbridge, abouth another hour south of Albany. Bluejack, good luck on your Oly at West Point, I think it'll be a few months before I'm up to that distance.

Like TriComet? What ever happened to her?

Since another GA newbie has joined, I guess I will jump into the boards too...  Just started myself and was a distance runner both track and CC in HS.  Would bike off and on, but nothing special.  Swimming... well lets just say that I am starting from stratch but have been getting better every week.

I grew up in St. Mary's for awhile back in the day

As they used to say in my fraternity.... "Welcome aboard... you dumb SOB !"

Good luck

10min/miles aren't so bad!

That's exactly it, trying to quickly or easily get back to our 'former' times and distance from a long hiatus.  Take your time, you will get there...and injruy free.  It takes a while to rebuild from a few decades of relative inactivity...personally, I have gotten injured more times than not trying to quickly attain the 'back then' numbers-even if it were just a few years ago.

You will get their and its also great that your wife shares the same fitness goals too. Good luck training!
