Subject: 40 week program?
I'm signed up for a 70.3 in June and an Ironman in August. I've only previously competed in the Olympic distance and was pretty much mid-back of the pack. My goal for both races is simply to finish (hopefully with a smile!). I'm looking for a training program (about 40 weeks from now till the Ironman). The BT programs are only 24 weeks and given that I consider my base fitness to be inadequate at this time, I'm looking to start now. I have a very flexible work schedule and can commit a good chunk of time to training. I'm also pretty minimalist (in the sense that I'd rather not use a HR monitor, powertap etc.). I'm also thinking that I'll need to focus alot on the bike as the course has alot of hills (Mont Tremblant).

Any suggestions? Much appreciated!

I'd use the 16 weeks before the 24 week program to build a good, substantial base.

40 weeks is a long time to follow any program.  Try following  jorges winter bike plan 3 -4 times per week with some swimming/running for general fitness over the winter.  Then drop into a structured training plan.  Might be easier on you mentally.  Its a long journey good, enjoy it.

40 weeks is too long. That's why there aren't really any 40 week training plans. I would recommend building base fitness for the next 16 weeks then get into the 24 week program. By the way 20 weeks is what I always do. I know it's intimidating to thi n about the shear distance, but you'll be ready if you follow the 20 week program.

The Be Iron Fit plan is a 30 week plan.  You may want to consider that option.

Inadequate for what?  To start the program or to make the events?  You can likely just have fun with things, doing each maybe a few times a week up until it's time to start the program.

I agree with others that 40 weeks is a loooonnnnggg time to follow a structured program. My race (first IM) is very close on the calendar to yours. My goal for now is just to work on building run/bike fitness, and maintaining some level of swim fitness (I'll start adding swim back in more seriously in a month or two....).

I'm following the Barry P running plan to build my run back up (look here to learn about the Barry P program...) and more or less following Jorge's winter cycling program for the bike, and trying to get myself to the pool a few times per week. At this point, it's all fairly casual, and if I miss a day of "training" it's no big deal.

Try this: http://www.trifuel.com/triathlon/ironman-workouts/ .  This is a 36 week program that has a 2 week orientation period then a 19 week preseason followed by 12 week competitive training and 2 week taper.  I am on my 10th week of this one and it has been pretty good to follow. This will have me ready for either the St. George or the coeur d'alene.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll look into the 36 week program.
