I use First Endurance Multi-V during the season but am looking for just a quality multivitamin to take daily. Is anybody really sold on their vitamin? Or would any generic multivitamin be sufficient?

I'm not super committed, I went with one-a-day mens health and a supplemental glucosamine/condroitin/msm.  seems to be working--I guess.

Used to use Orange Triad - its gotta be good if its making your pee glow in the dark right?

Switched to centrum chewable (because its chewable! I dont like swallowing pills) when switching focus from weight training to triathlon.

Nobody knows the answer.  In fact, nobody knows if they do any good at all.  I stopped taking one several years ago, once my diet & exercise regimin improved, and feel no different.  My advice is to drop them (unless you have a known deficiency in your body and/or diet) and use the money saved for some extra fruits and vegetables.

I will disagree with you. It's almost impossible for your average person to consume enough fruits/veges/fish etc. to gain all the nutrients from multi vitamins/multi minerals/EFA's.

Just because dropping them worked for you doesn't mean that will work for everyone.

It's not impossible to get most of what your body needs without taking a multi--some of what you take in a vitamin is likely peed out anyway.  If you want to take one, fine.  But to the extent there is any science on this, it's mixed at best.  The average person would be MUCH better off by improving their diet versus taking a multi.

I take the Target brand Men's One-a-day.  It seems to sit with my stomach easier than the rest and has gotten decent reviews.

I eat a balanced diet consisting of whole foods - which gives me enough vitamins / minerals - and no damage to my liver from pills

I've been thinking about getting this brand as it is a "whole foods" vitamin. Or at least that's what th packaging says

So, by seems to be working what do you mean?  How do you measure whether it's working or not?

I take, unreliably, a generic kids chewable.

Huh?  So how did we as a species make it to the 20th century?

As JK said, studies on the effects of vitamins are very varied, from 'somewhat helpful' to 'somewhat harmful' to 'no effect'.  But as to whether it is possible to eat normal food and get what you need, I don't think there is any serious scientific disagreement about.  It is possible by eating a healthy diet.

I know at our house we don't eat as well as we should.  Wife and I use ReLiv Classic (powder; mix in with OJ before breakfast).  Theory for it is better absorption, compared to a pill or capsule that may go pretty far in your system unscathed.  While I certainly concur science on this is not settled, there is some evidence that nutrient value of the good looking fruit and veggies in the supermarket is not equivalent to backyard gardens and farm stands of the "old days."  Any registered dieticians out there want to chime in?!

I am a big believer in whole food nutrition vs. vitamins.

You can check out the differences at www.raustinjuiceplus.com .

Lots of gold standard medical research to back up what Juice Plus claims.
