Does anyone have any experience using the IM Training plan by Matt Fitzgerald that was in Triathlete Magazine last year? I believe it was in the Kona issue (December 2010?) It is 20 weeks and low volume in terms of hours compared to most other plans. That being said, it seems very achievable for someone with work, family, etc.

Kailua,

Yes that was my plan for my first IM just a few short weeks ago (Florida).  I would say that going into this plan I was in ok shape, but nothing spectacular.  I too was attracted to the low volume and acheivable nature of the plan.  My work (surgery) and family (wife and two small kids) weren't going to permit much more in terms of hours spent.  I would say that I hit about 85% of my workouts and do not come from a competitive swimming/biking/running background.  Most of my workouts during the week were done on treadmill and bike trainer in the garage, whereas the weekend stuff was mostly outside.

I think that this plan was very good in terms of getting me ready for the ironman.  It's a good plan if your goal is finishing with a smile.  I finished an hour in front of my goal and wasn't suffering too bad (my real goal was just finish, but also set a time dream of 13-14 hrs).  Surprisingly the swim became my most comfortable sport after this program.  The only thing that it leaves out is nutrition, but that's another thread entirely.  I actually used the 1/2 ironman plan in the year prior Triathlete mag and it worked very well too.  Good luck with it, happy to answer other questions about it.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like we have the same job and family! Congrats on your 1st IM.

I looked at it and I liked his programs out of his book much better.  I'm only doing 1/2's this year and I'm planning on using his level 7 1/2 plan.  looks pretty good.

Agreed. I used the plans from book also for two IMs and found it to be a good fit for me, especially the swim workouts. I was able to take from two different levels to build the best plan to meet my abilities and strengths (better swimmer than runner). I plan to use the 70.3 plans from the book this year

Only negative I found with the book is the off-season plans. Rather light so expect much variety or intensity.

Is it the same as this?  It is what I am using for my first IM in June.

Well I am hoping it works for me, like I said, it's what I am using for my first IM.  I saved the pics from the site and saved them to my phone, I also painfully input each thing into my google calendar so I could get to it from anywhere.

Good luck!
