look at the top carbon

I've been drooling over these things all day.

Why do I torture myself by spending so much time staring at bikes I can't afford? I lust after carbon bikes more than GIRLS even! That just doesn't seem healthy for a college boy. Whatever, it's my drug of choice...while it may not be cheeper, it's better than heroin, right?

Sam. what you need is to find a girl who appreciates a bike the way you do. Sorry, but I'm too old for you

Lara, that's a sweet ride you're looking at too, and probably closer to being affordable. I had better stop looking right now!

It's also cheaper than the GIRLS even...and it never has a headache! LOL

Seriously, those are some neat bikes. Since I'm also a fellow bike junkie, I know my wife has heart palpitations every time we drive within 100 yards of a bike shop. The words she must hate to hear while on vacation are "Oh look Honey, a bike shop!"

I dont know much about the relative merits of bikes so could somebody enlighten me on the differences between steel, titanium, alu & carbon? I had a very nice Kona steel frame MTB years ago and now my Stumpjumper and Trek 1000 are all alu framed. I appreciate the carbon frames as a thing of beauty and they are lightweight I guess, but what are the other advantages versus other frame materials? The group I rode with today contained a real mix of all of them so is it just personal preference?

I have just recently bought a Kuota Kharma, I love it.

I put a Dura-Ace 10 speed.

It is so lite, at around 18lbs. loaded and climbs like crazy.

Now I just need to tune the motor to haul such a beautiful frame.

I feel like a bit of a poser, but I love this bike...

If you have an opportunity to ride one of these bikes take it, they are very nice..

I think after the hockey game I might go for a ride.

steel is strong, can be stiff, and heaviest
ti is lighter, strong and stiff
alu is light
carbon has basically become the best material around though. Bike builders have gotten better at aligning the carbon so that the strength of the fibers is actually translated into frame strength. It has the potential to be the lightest, while maintaining it's strength. The frames on all those bikes I posted weight like only 2 lbs. Carbon also has exceptional vibration dampening abilities. That means that the frames can absorb little vibrations from the road while still staying stiff. I don't know how it works, but it does. It's getting better and better too, so keep your eyes open.

As long as the cranks work, the gears change, the tires don't go flat, the wheels turn and I don't fall over...then I am good. But then again, I am pretty happy with the Kestrel Talon Shanna Armstrong gave me.

When I got my first nursing job in 1995 my first big purchase was my Trek 5200 carbon road bike...9 years later and I'm still LOVIN it! Although the wheels are crappy it's still a great ride and worth every cent!

ok - that's enough - stop making me dribble over these amazing machines. I can barely ride my 4 yr old Trek 1000 at any half decent pace (as I was embarrassingly reminded on my first ever group ride yesterday!) and now I'm unconciously talking myself into believing a $2000 bike will solve all my problems! I can't help it as i just can't settle for second best.

Mind you, all the triathletes that left me for dead last did have very tasty bikes, so that must be the problem.............

The bikes presented in this thread are fantastic, I recently was offered a test spin on an aegis, trident at  the local shop in the area.  The owner is a trimainiac and knows I can't buy but he's like "you gotta try this" he building two kits this week and if I can get over there I'll take it out. http://www.aegisbicycles.com/lo/frames/2003trident.html

What I was suprised about was that the aegis frame is under 3 pds, totally fitted the bike will be 18, my bike which is 20 yrs old has a steel alloy frame and weighs 20 pds.  Although my bike was considered state of the art in its day it does lack the aero components that are on today bikes which probably translate to speed.
