The Land of Ice and Snow
Subject: The freedom of the water......

Yesterday at the pool, I watched as a young woman was brought over to the pool deck. Her mother looked on as the lifeguards transferred her from her wheel chair into a special device that lowered her slowly into the water. They closed a lane just for her, and she began to float on her back and scull her way up and down the pool. She smiled and floated............free.

The water represents freedom for me as well.  I am recovering from yet another knee surgery. I am 7 weeks into my recovery and am not yet allowed to weight bear or even drive.

On land I move slowly and awkwardly, but in the water I am liberated.

I cherish this sensation, but know that eventually, after an extensive period of rehab, I will be able to walk again. True, I may never be able to really run again, but I will be able to walk. I will be able to ride. To cross country ski. To rock climb. To move.

Yesterday, watching that young woman, I realized how incredibly lucky I really am...........

It's nice to have those moments to realize how truly blessed we are.

Thanks for the reminder of how much ease and freedom I have. I love the concept of finding that place in which you can be graceful, a place we were made to function well in.

Thanks for sharing your experience. So sorry about the knee though. All the best to a great recovery.

I'm a massage therapist and I see many people in chronic pain, and I see people who are immobilized for various reasons (multiple sclerosis, for example). I treasure every ride, run, snowshoe, whathaveyou...even if it's a crappy day. I'm constantly thanking my body for what it can do, and I don't take it for granted that I am independently mobile.

Thank your bodies, everyone. Especially on the days you're having it rough.

I went through injury hell for almost two years, and I'm forever changed by the experience.  I will never take for granted my health and ability to move pain free again.

I totally agree with this . . .
