Hi Everyone!

I'm about 3 months into the couch to 5K program -- the 7 month one. I have never run before, biked only when I was a kid, and swam in competition in high school. (I'm thirty now and just had my first kid --- Joey . Joey's a doll, but you really have to be triathlete to keep up with him!!!

Can't wait to meet you all --- anyone got advice for a REAL newbie?

Keriann

hi kerriann,
at least you swam in high school. i am a total beginner. I did read this quote from this triathlete that said" don't exercise, train". if you look at it as exercising you don't have the right mentallity. just thought you'd like to know. I look at this whole experience as a scary thought.

Keriann,

Great to have you here on our site. I'm glad you have "given up the couch" for a more active life. While I'm far from an expert, I started doing what you are doing about 2 years ago. I went from not being able to run to the mailbox to being a pretty solid "middle of the pack runner" up to 1/2 marathons. Anyway, good luck, be sure to read lots (Runners World is a great resouce), as well as some of the great books you can probably find at your local library. Also, you will find a tremendous amount of info here on this site, so be sure to check back (and give us updates).

Good luck,

Dennis

Welcome!  Many of us are beginners so you are in good company!  I agree with above - read a lot, and seek out other triathletes.  Any local tri clubs near you?

Thanks guys! Glad I'm not alone. I'll tell ya, every week I think, there is no way that I can do this -- yet each week I've made my goals.

I think you're right about the training mind set. It's easier to get out the front door because I'm "working toward something" rather than "I have to exercise." It almost becomes I game.....can I run as far as this house...can I make it to the top of this hill?

You know I haven't even checked out the local tri-club. (But I know there is one at my local Y) I'm way too pathetic to meet up with the big boys yet!

Keriann:

Hi! I was in the same boat a couple of years ago myself, and have found that once I began to become active, I wanted more and more to be that way. It's starting to effect almost every decision I make, and even rubbing off on my wife (who will be doing her first 1/2 marathon in October) and my kids (who all want to do triathlons as well--though they are too young still). Just take it slowly so you don't injur yourself, listen to your body, and read, read, read and you'll do fine.

Keri, welcome and good luck with your training.
It's amazing what you can achieve with the right mindset and a concrete goal to work towards.
