Engineer runs marathon across the Sahara Desert

Desert temperatures of up to 48°C (118°F) and a backpack weighing 10 kilograms (22.046 pounds) did not deter Sam Jeremy, an electrical engineer on the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) project in Baku, Azerbaijan, from attempting the world-famous Marathon des Sables – a 243-kilometer (151-mile) race across the Sahara Desert that takes place over seven days.

Sam Jeremy, an electrical engineer, successfully completed the seven-day Sahara marathon.
Sam participated in the marathon to raise money for Facing Africa, a British charity. He successfully completed the race in April, covering the equivalent of a marathon a day while carrying all of his food, spare clothes and equipment on his back.

"The marathon was one of the biggest challenges I have ever undertaken," Sam said. "Nothing can prepare you for the heat and blisters. I was burning up to 8,000 calories every day and living off high-calorie dried foods such as noodles, crisps and nuts. It was worth all the effort, however, as I was able to raise more than £1,000 ($1,800) for charity."

The charity that Sam benefited, Facing Africa, helps to tackle Noma, a gangrenous infection of the face caused by chronic malnutrition that often causes death and terrible facial damage. Facing Africa's mission is also to help prevent further incidences of the affliction in sub-Saharan Africa.

Ever heard of the Bataan Memorial Death March? Obviously not as long, but certainly not easy. They do it every year, it brings representatives from all different countries and such. Kinda neat.

DANG!!!!! I'm guessing there were support vehicles or something providing water, right? How do you have an article on a race through the sahara and have no mention of water?

That's really cool though
