Subject: Massage Therapy
After enough guilt for not giving me massages, my wife bought me a fifty minute massage from a LMT. Now I have to figure out how to incorporate it into my training plans. My question to anyone who cares to reponds is: When is the best time to incorporate a massage into a training schedule. I am not experiencing any severe pain that requires immediate treatment, but want to enjoy the release that a massage would bring. I have a race in three weeks and then another two weeks after that. Not sure if I should schedule the massage in between races, before races or after races. Not sure if I should schedule it immediatly following an intense workout or prior to an intense workout. Any guidance concerning this is greatly appreciated.

Why not schedule it between your two races?  Seems reasonable enough.

If it was me, I would see how I felt after the first race. If no new pain/tightness is present, then save it until after the second race to relieve all tension. Either way, it sounds like you will be happy in the end (get it.....happy ending??.....OK, stupid pun).

I had my first massage 2 days before my Oly last september and felt GREAT for the race. But you may feel sore instead. If you just have the one massage to enjoy, the above suggestion about seeing how you feel after the first race sounds good. If you feel OK, save it for after the 2nd race as a reward!

I gotta tell ya, I'm sold on massages. My therapist is exceptional. He is working on my pain threshold. Each massage gets deeper and deeper in the tissue. I get hotrocks to take my mind off it.

I would advise to not workout for 24hrs, due to risk of injury. Your body, muscles, mind, everything is in such a loose and relaxed state. My therapist advised against a swim the morning after for this reason. I did light stratching and walked, but that's about it.  Ask the therapist what he/she thinks.

ENJOY Massage does amaaaaazing things for the body.

Appreciate all the input on this subject. I'll probably follow the guidance of waiting to see how I feel after the first race and, if needed, get r'done. Thanks again for the insight.
