Subject: Back after Hip Surgery
Hi Everyone,

It's been a couple of years since I've logged on, so I thought this time around I'd actually introduce myself and try to be more active online.

I got into tris back in 2008 and did a couple of sprints before injuring my hip in late 2009 :(

I had arthroscopic hip surgery at the end of 2010, and I just can't stay away any longer! So, basically I'm starting over from scratch.

Just wondering if anybody else has had hip injuries - or any type of joint injury really - and what post-surgery training/recovery tips you may have? Any would be greatly appreciated :D

Cheers!
Nicole

Hi Nicole! Welcome back. Glad you're recovering well and want to get into the game again.

We have a sick/injured/recovering thread in Tri Talk and several people have posted about hips. In any case, we're a nice bunch and you may want to come visit.

Also, for getting involved, a mentor group is great for support, info, get-to-know -- I think there are a very few spots still open, and the link is at the top of this forum.

I had a "hip" injury as well.

I was hit by a car while training on my bike, and broke both my collarbone, and snapped the head of my femur clean off right at the hip.

You can see the multiple rod insertions it took to fix it.

Luckily the ball and socket are intact, it was just a matter of re-attaching the ball to the rest of the femur.  Looks like no cartridge damage either.

I still have 9 months before I am allowed to run, there is a chance that if it does not continue to heal well, i may eventually need a full hip replacement ><

15 months later I am losing the weight I put on and am working my butt off to get it off.  Lots of swimming, cycling, elliptical, incline treadmill walking etc.  Even some strength training, there is definitely a muscle imbalance now I am trying to take care of.

Good luck!

Welcome back Nicole!

Recovery can be rough times... just take it easy from the beginning and build everything back up.  Time is your friend.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the responses!

TriAya - Thanks for the link to that thread, looks like there's a lot of helpful info there. I'm definitely going to try to get with a mentor, if it's not too late!

dfquigley - Wow, it's inspiring to hear that after all of that, you're back in the saddle. Best wishes on your continuing recovery!
