Subject: Visting Vancouver- Where can I train??
Hi all -
I'll be in Vancouver Apr 28 - May 4. Any suggestions on what I can do about training? Unfortunately, I just miss the marathon - would jump into the half. Any pools around? Places to rent road bikes? Any suggested tri/bike/running clubs that I could contact about workouts?

And while I'm at it, any hidden gems of places to visit? Maybe some nice hiking/running trails?

Thanks.

I'll try to reply with more detail later on

here's some quick stuff off the top of my head

Kitsilano Pool
139 meters, along waters edge.   Unfortunately i dont remember what month it opens!

Grouse Grind  "Mother Nature's Stairmaster"  (weather dependent)

Stanley park sea wall - one of the more beautiful runs you might ever have, any time of year.

Chris has pretty well nailed the top three I would recommend. Especially the Grouse grind.

There is also a good run/ride along the Spanish Banks near UBC by Jericho Beach. You can actually run from the Seawall mentioned about all the way around to there if you want a long run. There is also an outdoor pool actually in Stanley Park that is nice, don't remember what month that opens though either.

If you can find a bike to rent the ride up Cypress or Mount Seymour is pretty intense as well. They are more North Van, so you would have to find your way up there. The Simon Fraser campus in Burnaby also has nice trails and would be a great hill workout for ride/run. Google "Burnaby Mountain"

Grouse Grind is a great hike! Just try to start a bit earlier in the day...if you leave it too late it gets super busy!

Chris, Paul & Melinda have pretty much summed up the best spots..

Here's a link to Vancouver Parks Board.. for both their indoor & outdoor pools... If Kits Pool is open it's definitely worth visiting.. not often you get a chance to swim in a 137m salt water outdoor pool!

If you're looking to rent a bike to do a ride up Cypress or Seymour.. it looks like Different Bikes (West Vancouver location) rents a variety of road bikes.. while their North Van store does more Mountain Bike rentals..

If you're looking for riding partners or group sessions while you're in the area.. drop me a PM.. and I'll see what I can find.. I know North Shore Triathlon has Wednesday night group rides..

Just make sure you give yourself enough driving time between where you're staying and where you will be training.

I just got back from Vancouver and driving was a nightmare :p

Really? Where are the bottlenecks? I'll be staying downtown near the Convention center.

Yes.. the bridges are the most common bottleneck areas.. particularly the Lions Gate & Second Narrows... which link the "North Shore" (North/West Vancouver to Vancouver & Burnaby/Vancouver respectively).... the other bridges around the Metro area... Burrard Street, Granville, Cambie, Knight Street, etc, etc aren't as bad.. so far as i know...
