I'm doing the half-marathon in this race 2/18.
Gonna try to finish around 1:50. Anyone going to this one?
Starting to get ready for Liberty HIM 6/9. It's gonna be hard.

I was planning on it being my first half but family obligations came up and I will have to skip it.

Have fun and good luck.

Does anyone know if this is a USATF certified course? I'm at the airport in JAX and can't figure it out on my phone. But after today's half we need to find another race before 4/1.

The half-marathon course is not certified per race director.

OK, thanks.  I need to find a certified course for my wife who is trying to skip the lottery for NYC.  She has until April 1 to run a 1:37 or better, and right now only has Get Lucky lined up to do it.  After April 1 the qualifying time drops to something crazy like 1:33 for her age group.

Did she run with you in FL?  How close is she?

She's close, she ran a 1:40 at Monster Dash, and has done 10 mile long runs at the 7:15ish pace that she needs for the half.  Just has a problem with race day attitude and overcoming adversity.  She didn't come close in FL this past weekend, with the cold weather and wind she threw in the towel halfway through the race.  But she really wants to do NYC and with the changes in the lottery (no more 3 strikes and you're automatically in) she just wants to qualify.

Oh boy, that's a tough one. Maybe she should spend the next few weeks before the Get Lucky learning about mental strategies.   I know that sports psychology is an industry itself for a reason.  Maybe some books/articles on how to overcome adversity.  She knows the course has some hills, right?   She should mentally prep for that.  Can she run the course pre-race?  It could also be cold, so maybe she can work on some ideas for how to dress for different scenarios.  Also, maybe she needs some race day help.  Are you also running?  If not, can you help by driving her to the race so she can sit in the warm car until the last minute and also have some peace and quiet?  In fact, there are many ways you can support her on the course too by planning to meet her at certain places.  I've found some peace of mind when worrying about a race that, if I need him, my husband is waiting at x mile with the y thing I might want.  Good luck to her!   If I could come at all close to qualifying for NYC I would be thrilled.

I wish I had known this earlier, I could have recommend the 3m half marathon in Austin.  It's a mostly downhill course, great conditions, etc.    If she's shooting for that qualification next year, it's worth remembering.

WOO! HOO! Finished 1/2 marathon in 1:46. Half Fast Half Marathon. Way better I had expected. First 10 miles in 80 mins (8-min pace). Faded next two miles and recovered to finish it. Training is paying off.

Great job! It was a nice course. Those middle miles were kind of fun.

You can't compare Monster 1/2 Marathon to regular ones. It's one-way and almost all down hill BUDDY!

FoggyGoggles - 2012-02-14 9:15 AM

Worst case scenario... the Florida Holiday Halfathon in December is a course I plan on PR'ing this year. After running a 1:40 at Monster as well, I was eager to hit the Sarasota course for a 1:35 and easily could have done it with the pancake course.

I did. That one little hill around mile 5 was surprising. I finished at 1:25 and change. Had one mile blow up on me. I just lost my focus mile 9 to 10. The weather was perfect and the sparse crowds will still awesome.

You've got blistering 6:30 pace for 13 miles which is very good. Laughing

I really like doing smaller races rather big ones.

Great job guys!  silentcs42 - I see you put 12.8 miles in your log.  Was the course a bit short?

Definitely. While I love seeing the 6:33/mile result on their website I ran a steady diet of 6:40s and a couple 6:30s. My guess is ~0.3 mi short. My GPS was off when we started, so I turned it on. It didn't pick up until about 4 min in. I hit the lap counter at the 1 mile marker. My GPS had the course at 12 miles flat with that little snafu. Since it was an out and back it was easy to figure out how much I lost in distance. Hence my 12.8.
