Subject: Bar end shifters removal/replacement
How difficult is it to remove bar end shifters and put them on different aerobars? I have aerolites on my bike now and have a pair of carbon strykes I'd like to replace them with. I also will have to internally route the cable, so will have to seperate the shifter from the cable.

Is this real involved or require special tools other than the basics? Can someone lay out the steps before I start taking them off?

I can also just take them to my LBS to put on when I get my tune up, if'n it's too difficult.

Thanks
-Seb

I've only done this once and going by memory. I'm sure if I've got it wrong, someone will correct me

1) loosen the cable at the derailer.
2) Pull the cable all the way out at the shifter. It will probably help to have the shifter on the small cog/chainring to help the re-install.
3) Remove the screw on the side of the shifter base and pull the "bolt" freeing the shifter lever.
4) Loosen the alen bolt on the inside of the shifter base.
5) Slip the shifter base out of bar.

Installation is in the reverse order. You may want to use new cables if your current cable shows any signs of fraying.

If you can adjust a derailer, you should have no problem doing this yourself.

I don't know if this will help, but if they are Shimano, you can go to this website for the 2005 exploded parts diagrams and maintenance instructions for all levels of their derailleurs;

I replaced my aerolites with t2+'s w/o any prior knowledge, I am a DIY by nature though so that stuff interests me. all you need is an allen wrench, a screwdriver, and a very small brain.

Are your cables routed internally in the frame? If they are, changing them can be a PITA. If they are just internally routed through the aerobars, then not so much.

What kind of bike is this?

I just switched out my Carbon Strykes for T2's and it was not too bad. It was all Shimano so I went to the website and printed out the instructions on the shifters. I am not sure what your current bars look like but if the new ones are longer, you may need new cables. I am a DIY person as well so I just went slow and eventually figured it all out.

Yeah, the cables are internally routed on the frame; it's a Felt S32. The shifters are DA so I'll print out the exploded view and take a look at it tonight. I need to go in for a tune-up anyway, so I'll probably just have the LBS do it, but it would be nice to know how to do it on my own.

Thanks guys

DA bar end shifters are not overly-complicated devices. Basically, the cable just wraps around the barrel of the shifter and gets tighter as it goes. The front shifter isn't even really indexed.

The pic of the s32 on the Felt website shows externally routed cables.

Anyway, what i learned, the hard way, is that if your cables are routed inside the frame tubes,(like my Guru) get some of the tubing that bike makers use to lessen cable slap in top tube routed and slip it over the cable inside the tube FIRST so that you have a path to route the replacement.

On the S32 the rear derailleur cable is external, but the rear brake is internal.

Yes, the only cable internal is the rear brake, everything else is external meaning that you have free reign over them. good luck.
