Still dialing in my aero position. Had a bike fitting at Helen's in Santa Monica, and I think that they did a lousy job overall. Thoughts please?

From what I see, looks like your seat is a bit high.

Disclaimer: I've never had a tri bike or fitted for a tri bike.

It looks like your upper body is scrunched up. Looks like you could benefit from a longer stem.  Seeing your back curve like that...it looks painful.

As for the seat being too high...I have no idea...it looks like you have a slight bend in your knee, and that's good.  How does your butt feel? Does it feel like your hips are rocking too much when you pedal? If so, then it's too high.

Let me start by saying I'm not a fitter. IMO......

1. The bike is too small and geometry may be all wrong for you
2. The contact points themselves don't look bad
3. Your position on the bike could use some help

You do seem scrunched but you have plenty of room to move forward on the bike. That should open up the hip angle, move your arm angle closer to 90degrees and straighten out the arch in your back. If you are not flexible enough to do this, the bikes geometry is not favorable to you

Hmm, maybe you don't fit on that frame?

Looks like they had to go with a stem that points straight up in an attempt to get closer to 90 degrees for the forearms since the reach looks a bit long.  Not sure how more forward you can go with that seat position since it doesn't look like you can put any kind of longer lower stem on there.

Because of using that stem they had to get your seat higher possibly.

It doesn't look awful, I've seen much, much worse.

Why do you think it is bad?

I agree with Tony... the bike isn't the right size. :/ And by quite a bit it looks. If you can go forward on the saddle (maybe an Adamo is out of the cards) that may help a little... you are heading into "superman" range of an aero position, and I don't think you are trying to intentionally do that.

From the pic it looks as though you have room to extend the bars and get you elbows further forward on the pads.

his arms certainly don't need to go forward any more

A video would likely be better, but here's what I see:

I don't think the bike is to small, I don't think you're setup on it correctly.

  • You're on an adamo and your sitting way back - Slide forward on the seat, A LOT.
  • Sliding up on the seat will also likely help your seat height, though you may want to drop it down a bit.  re-access seat height after you move forward.
  • The stem is likely too short or just right once you actually get into the correct seating position on the adamo.  However, judging by the picture you look a bit cramped and could go longer.
  • You're really not all that low in the front, if you have other stems around maybe try 17 degree stem angled up.  Better yet pick up an adjustable stem and test multiple angles.  The T2 bars are really adjustable and you can experiment with different reach lengths by moving the pads for/aft.

I don't think it's warranted to conclude the fit is bad (at least not for me).  Your fitting should have included a discussion about your preferences, your comfort level, your desired race distances.

Because it is a reasonably good fit for long course racing, or for someone who was telling them that they wanted to be a little higher.

It's not always about aerodynamics alone.

But if I were evaluating you on aerodynamics alone, I would say that you could handle a more traditional stem angle so that you would end up with elbows at least an inch lower (or 2).  Then, the seat should move forward.  Then you might slide those extensions just a little forward and Viola!  A position that looks aero.

The seat or your position on the seat needs to come forward.

You need to rotate your hips forward . The reason you are scrunched is you are trying to sit on your sit bones and then bend forward from the waist. If you rotate your hips forward, your torso will relax and drop more parallel to the ground. It's easier to rotate froward more from the tip of the saddle...it's difficult to do sitting all the way back as more of your "junk" is in contact with the seat. It's also a bit easier the more over the bottom bracket you are.

First off, thank you for the feedback. This is invaluable to me.

The online fitting was done using the inspector feature of triracebook.com

My goal is to get comfortable doing up HIM on this bike with an eye towards IMAZ in 2013. I have done a number of races with my roadie and aerobars, but decided to pick up a tri bike this year.

So it looks like the general consensus is get a lower angle stem, move the seat and the aerobars forward and change the hip rotation. Any other thoughts?

The choice of stem is kind of strange. Was this a new bike purchase tailored to your measurements, or did you come in with a bike and they had to figure out how to make it fit?

I think you should either get a video, or post a few more pics including horizontal cranks, left leg extended, and one where you rotate your pelvis a bit so you are more horizontal and sitting on the saddle like you are on a tri bike.

From the picture, its you more so than the seat that needs to move forward.

I picked up the bike used (it came with Cosmic Carbone tubulars and a road setup - wtf) - and the shop had to make it fit. They felt the bike is too long for me, and I'd be better off with a P2 or a Cannondale Slice. Given what I know about road bike geometries, I felt that I should be able to adjust the bike to make it fit - it is not different size wise from my roadie. Probably my ignorance.

Comes to think about, I have an adjustable stem laying around - I can put it on and see if I can lower the stem angle.

The position does not look that bad but a static photo is never the best (hard to see if you're rocking side to side...)    A few observations:

1. That stem is more erect then my grandpa when he confused this bag of blue M&M with his Viagra. Did the shop recommend that much rise?  Not really an issue, just unusual.

2. Your elbow angle is fairly open - some people like that but for many its an indicator that they are too stretched out. Since the stem is already short you may not have a lot of room to shorten it.  It looks like you're rising on an Adamo saddle, do you have any room to slide it forward 1-2cm?

3. Have you tried a praying-mantis position? It might close up that open front and make you more comfortable. Below is a photo of David Zabriskie in his Praying Mantis position.

4. The lose wires hanging from the TV and behind the router look messy. I'd clean them up and maybe run a white plastic conduit up to the TV.

I am going to say you need a longer stem lower stem, and you should be sitting more forward on that seat. You could move seat forward and larger stem. The seat height looks ok. And to throw a bit of ST humor on here run the tv wires behind the wall, get a proper front wheel holder and put some clothes on that tattoo ;0)
