Subject: Swim watch recommendation

I am looking to get a cheap or basic watch that I can wear while swimming laps. I'm not familiar with all the fancy features swim watches have nowadays so i'm looking for your recommendations. Not looking to spend more than $40 if possible.

The only features I can think of that I would need is overall swim time and current lap time. Any other nice features you suggest I may want?

Those are the basic features you need.

The one nice thing to have is a timer that auto resets to do intervals in case you don't have access to a pace clock.

x 5 on the Timex Ironman (got mine at Target for $40).  Have worn mine in the pool the past 4 years and it has never missed a beat.

Thanks for the recommendations! Looks like i'll be getting a Timex Ironman watch. Did a quick search on walmart.com and looks like there's a ton of different ones available. What does it mean when a watch is capable of doing 10, 30, 50, or 100 laps? Are you supposed to hit the lap button when you're done with an interval so that you can go back and see your splits for each interval? So the more laps the watch is capable of the better?

I have the 50 lap watch. Depending on what my workout is how I use it. Some times I want to see how my 50 yard look. But for the must part I use the lap counter ever 100 yards. You will then be able to see your best 100 yards, your average 100 yards, and each 100 yards. Love the watch which I have used for over4 years now both in the pool and an every day watch. With the 50 lap watch counting every 100 yards you can record up to 5000 yards.

That is how I used mine until I upgraded to the 910.  After every set I hit lap.  You can then go back and review the laps if interested.  I rarely did, but what happens if you get to lap 30 say and your not done it just clears out the first laps.  So you can still use the lap feature but you'll lose some of the early data.  I mostly hit lap to see what I swam at that time and to count my rest so I know when to start going again (and I hit lap on takeoff again)

Yes, I think most people use it that way.  Lap button at the end of an interval.  I have a 150 lap verision but unless you are doing 25yd intervals for an hour, you won't come close to needing 150 laps.  I never hit 50 (but I probably have come close to 30).

My only advice is don't get one of the "slim/sleek" ones as the face is pretty small and a little tough to read underwater (my wife has one that I have had to borrow).  I much prefer the big face so I can display total time and lap time w/o having to squint.

I'd go for the 100 lap version, especially if you might use it for more than just swimming.  I use my Timex Ironman 100 lap for everything.  And with 100 laps, I can store the workouts, and then download the info (swim splits, mile running splits, etc...) every couple of days or even once a week when I'm filling out my log book.

I have a big yellow Timex Ironman which I bought dirt cheap off of eBay.  It has a 100 laps; but basically after every set I hit the lap button (and sometime I just time the entire workout!).  Really happy with it ... I'll second the idea of getting a watch with a big face.
