Just found the site and am looking for motivation on cycling....I know it sounds funny to say as I never hear anyone complaining about the bike - but that is the part that I hate....I have done a couple of Sprints before, but went back to running since I hate it so much.....any motivational comments appreciate (as I need to get back in the saddle again!!)

welcome.  let me say first that when i started i HATED the bike - abhorred may be a stronger word.  who wants to sit for 2+ hours???  i never felt i got a workout like running or swimming did.  PLUS i would rather get a great intensity workout in a shorter time...cycling - or at least the way i was training - did not do that.

years later?  i kinda look forward to it.  comfortablility is key.  plus i am spinning a lot better.  i was a low rpm gear turner and legs were always screaming.

try riding on trails.  you get a better essence of speed.  i find roads dull and boring for the most part and i hate worrying about cars.

keep at it.  u wills start to like it the more you ride and start working in drills so you have a 'purpose' when u ride.

good luck

Welcome!  Well, Ron, as usual, has some great tips.  Just keep at it, maybe it will become your best event!

I agree w/ Ron (although I'm not sure "comfortability" is really a word - sorry Ron I had to. lol) I've only got a street bike so trails are out for me (but I like the suggestion) however I began by taking scenic rides in low traffic areas w/o worrying about time, speed etc. I took to stopping for water, resting and just generally enjoying the surroundings of places that i wouldn't get to if i wasn't riding. I still am not a fast rider (o.k. if i"m being honest I suck on hills!) but I now actually enjoy my rides whereas when i started I was like you. Hang in there and just try to enjoy! Good luck and welcome back, Mark

I'm strictly a runner and swimmer, too. If I could bike just half-way decently I'd be a top 10 finisher in my age group. I find it damn frustrating seeing my swim lead over the pack evaporate in minutes...and nothing is more frustrating to me than seeing people zoom by me on the bike. Really grinds me.

Enough griping. I'm trying to look at the situation this way: I can only get better. And I have, marginally. But progress is progress.

Good Luck!

Thanks to you all for your suggestions and/or shared frustrations....Being new, I am surprised at how much response my little note got!! I live at the base of a Mt (big hill) in Northern California and my goal is to be able to get over it....some day soon!

I have been an avid cyclist for over forty years but have been jogging and swimming for twenty. In order to truly enjoy cycling, you need to start with a bike that is fitted to you. Next, outfit yourself for cycling: shoes, shorts, jersey, gloves, helmet, etc. Learn how to spin and how to use ALL your gears properly and to your advantage. Someday, everything will come together and it will fee like you are flying....something akin to that so-called "runner's high" which some of us get while jogging.

Welcome to the site!!! If you live next to a big hill in northern california, that must be Shasta?????

I too am a runner, converted to triathlete - and after breaking down on my bike last weekend, I share your frustruation with those crazy two wheeled contractions.

I have a couple of hills in the Chico area that I am working on, trying to get up them without throwing my bike over my shoulder and running with it (namely honeyrun road). Much as I hate to say it, I believe that the secret is simply to spend more time in the saddle.

Good luck,

Dennis

I definitely do not have the right stuff....am looking into upgrading my bike...what shoes and pedals have you liked? I am curious as to what works in the real world instead of what I am sold in mags and in shops....and I do not have any riding buddies - yet - to ask

And....actually, my house is adjacent to Mt. Diablo (named well as it is a devil), nothing so daunting as Shasta I am afraid

Ahhh, the geographic difference - in Chico, we consider anything south of Sacramento "Southern Californai". I am most certainly not someone to ask about bike parts and shoes, as I am still on a mountain bike (with street tires) and my running shoes. There is a lot of people on this site that do know bikes, though.

I wish the bike was my worst, unfortunately, it is my best.  Consider yourself lucky: if you suck air on a mike, your a little slower.  If you suck air in the pool as I do, you sink!  Take some spin classes.  And their right, nothing will make it easier other than doing more of it....

Good luck!

Hello and welcome to the site! I was honestly just thinking yesterday that I rarely hear anyone say they need the most help with biking, and today I read your message! Weird! Anyway, you've got good advice from others who are far more experienced than I, so I'll just add a hello and good luck!
