Subject: Shorts & Underwear Question

I've been running for several years now, but really picked up my frequency and distances this year in preparation for my first half marathon.

I'm running wearing Under Armour underwear, and Champion shorts, and I'm getting a bad skin irritation on my lower back from the labels on the shorts/underwear.

Is the solution to this problem to start wearing running shorts, which appear to not require underwear (not sure where the support comes from then) and not have a label, or to find tagless shorts/underwear, or something else?

Any help would be appreciated.

I grew up riding and training horses in Dressage...the kind of riding were you wore the tight breeches, so you could see the color of your underwear underneath unless you wore a neutral color. Well I used to buy and still do buy all my underware from the cataloges/websites that sell horseback riding stuff. They sell the best seamless/tagless/smoothest undies I've ever found. Plus you can get padded undies to compliment your bike shorts for extra comfort. The brands are basically whatever the saddle/tack store company is. I know Dover makes some of the best riding clothes in the industry. State Line Tack is another good company to buy from. If they can hold up to daily horseback riding they can hold up to training.

Get spandex 8" leg shorts and wear them as underwear.

Probably the same idea as the person above me but you can find these in running stores. Compression tights, running tights, or something like that is what they'll go by.

I only run in running shorts for training as I have not done a triathlon yet. They have built-in underwear which I like so I only wear those with nothing underneath. I don't have any issues with "support" but that is just me. Check out runningwarehouse.com ... I got mine on sale and they have free shipping both ways so if you want to return them there is no charge!

Buy some Body Glide and put it anywhere you have had an irritation before you run longer distances. Great stuff!! ---Ali

I've picked up bodyglide for use, uh, other places.  :-)  I had not thought of using it that way.  Thank you!

You could cut out or unpick the labels...

most "real" running shorts have no tags and built in support briefs.. you should def. pick some up.  Also, if you like the support of the compression style shorts/undies there are several makers of running shorts that have built in compression shorts with the outer layer being the traditional more modest shorts.

Thank you.  I have one pair that I like, and I'm waiting until the Expo before my 13.1 race to see if I can find some discounts and different inseam lengths.

Cool. you should be able to get some good discounts there... just don't "try them out" during the race... remember nothing new on race day!

I have been looking for running shorts that have that " compression style undie feature". What are some of the brands that have this.

Thanks.
