My triathlon costs for the past year and a half

How much it’s coasted so far:

-         $1,200 – bike and accessories

-         $200 – wet suit, goggles

-         $150 – swim pool accessories, swimsuit

-         $850 – master’s swim annual fee

-         $300 – biking clothes, biking shoes

-         $300 – YMCA and spin classes (per year, approx.)

-         $900 – various races entree fees (inc. iron man)

-         $500 – travel expenses (approx)

-         $100 – at least on gels, power bars, sport drinks etc.

OK, so $4,500 in a year…….and I’m sure I’ve missed some staff..

On a positive side, I quit drinking and smoking, so there is a saving there..

And I’ve never looked or felt better in my life.

It’s worth it!! (Now that all is justified, I can go and buy that beautiful STORK)

The masters and spin class fee seems insane where do you live? Even if I paid full fee for my masters its only about 350 a year but bundled with my year gym pass its only about 200.

Agree not good to add it up.  Include winter sports and the number is even larger.  If you get rid of the cable tv you can buy more gear.

I spent about the same. A little more on the bike + wheels, but I guess I'm lucky I don't pay for the pool or spin classes. +1 Military yay. And I get big discounts at hotels for having the "in" on Marriott's. Super yeah.

Sh1t gets expensive...thats why I always offer and looking for someone to carpool with and split gas or hotel... Save some $$$$

The hotel fees is what kills me, my wife likes to go with me and she aint gonna stay in a nasty hotel. I think my hotel expenses is around $1000.00 last year and i didnt do as many races in 2011 as i did in 2010. I have kept in good shape by doing the tri's, but dang i could have restored my 65 mustang by now. Frown

Compared to other hobbies which don't have nearly as beneficial health side effects (which are priceless) tri's are dirt cheap, even in the high four figures. I don't regret a penny I've spent on tri gear so see no need to add it up. Made that mistake with scuba gear years ago, stopped doing the math when it reached six digits.

Triathlons only get really expensive when they lead to divorce

I had been afraid of adding up the totals, but this thread made me sufficiently curious to add it up.

The total for my first 18 months in triathlon comes to somewhere in the $5-6k range. Ouch! ... And this includes only the stuff that is specific to tri/du training and racing, so it excludes what I would have spent anyway as a runner/biker who was not competing in multisport, i.e., no running shoes and clothing, no run entry fees, including an expensive Ragnar adventure, no costs on road bike maintenance etc., nor the cost of a pricey 4-bike carrier for the family.

The good news is that when broken out into one-time costs (e.g., TT bike, wetsuit) vs. recurring costs (race fees, pool membership, etc.), the recurring costs come out to only abut 40% of the total. Race accommodation fees have been almost zero, due to focusing on races that are within striking distance from home.

But feeling healthier and more energized than I have in years is priceless.

that's my thought too...can't put a price on your health! Don't worry about it, you'd just spend it on something that'd probably contribute to your demise anyway!

Of all the investments I've made in my life, triathlon ranks near the top. The return has far outweighed the cost.

My wife likes to stay in top shelf hotels as well. We did Kona last year (lottery) and I don't want to ever contemplate what that cost me. Certainly five figures for one race, but the experience was priceless.
