Subject: times for OWS compared to pools

Newbie question and sorry if this was asked before, but could not find anything in previous threads. I have spent my life swimming OWS in local lakes and rivers, so I know how and I'm not worried about it, but I've never timed myself. My question is, what difference in time should I expect compared to pool times. The Sprint I will be doing is in July, so no wet suit needed and it is on a very small lake with mostly calm water. I can not flip turn in the pool, so do an open water turn. I know pushing against the wall helps, but is not as good as just keeping up with the strokes.

I still have four months of training before my first Tri, and recovering from shoulder injuries my swim is finally starting to improve lately. No point suggesting I try timing it at a local lake, as water is still frozen in the Ottawa area, and I don't plan on jumping in before the end of June.

If someone who has done OWS on similar calm water could tell me the difference in times compared to pool swimming, I would appreciate the info.

Thanks,

Luc

I would say that if you are very good at swimming straight in OWS it's about 6seconds/100m slower than a 25m pool.

I would say about 1.5 seconds per turn. I base this on personal experience and time difference when swimming in a 50m pool vs a 25m pool.

zig zagging in open water, sighting, drafting, being stopped by other swimmers will alter this

I don't think I'll never know exactly because the true distance in any OWS race will "float" a little.  The bouys will move, your true distance swam will vary based on sighting etc.  What I have noticed for me is that my OWS swim pace per 100 yards is anywhere from 10-20 seconds slower than my long pool swim times.

For example:  In a SCY swim of 1000 yards, it took me 14:20 to complete the race which is approx. 1:26 per 100 yards.

I think my best OWS swim pace was 1:35 per 100 yards.  I typically average around 1:40 per 100 yardsin OWS.

There are really way too many variables involved.  For example, how fast are your turns in the pool?  How well can you keep a straight line in open water?  And the biggest variable of all is that the open water swim is highly unlikely to be accurately measured.

I've done supposed 1500m open water swims that took 21, 25 and 31 mins.  750m swims that took anywhere from 9 to 13 mins as well as a 400m swim that took 12.  Basically, you have no idea what you're gonna get.

Thank you for the answers. I realize there are many variables, but I got the answer I was looking for. To be on the safe side, I will expect an extra 45 - 60 seconds for a 750 meters swim and will be able to compare with the results from last year's event.

My goal on my first Sprint is simply surviving, but even after years of neglect, there's a small part of my brain which seems decided on "not finishing last :-)"

Since that part is very helpful in motivating me to work harder,

I figure that part is not all wrong :-))

Thanks Again,

Luc

some people who don't turn well, like me, are fastter in ows

About 5 sec per 100 faster in OWS for me, largely due to the wetsuit!

10 seconds faster in OWS with Wetsuit.  10 seconds slower without.

I think I faster in OWS. My guess is most likely due to wetsuit buoyancy and slow turns in pool. I find it much easier to find a rhythm while OWS because you don't have to turn around every 25.

As others have said, lots of variability depending on course accuracy, water conditions, how crowded it is, your skills in swimming in a large group, rounding buoys, etc. My best OWS 1500m is about 3 minutes over my pool time. That was in the ocean, calm, no wetsuit, fairly good navigation, in a very spread-out field so not boxed in, but no drafting. I swim best that way as I'm used to it and can relax. Times tend to be worse if I'm in a very crowded race. If it's a wetsuit swim, then the added buoyancy will counteract some of the factors that add time, and you might be faster if the water's calm and you navigate well and don't get stuck behind slower swimmers.

faster in wetsuit yes!, but if you spot like me and zig zag in current like me...slow as  "expletive"

My OWS pace with a wetsuit = my LCM pool swim pace without a wetsuit. The wetsuit helps, but you have sighting issues, directional challenges, exiting the water to get to T1, etc., so it become a wash.

A wetsuit in a LCM pool will drop my 100 time by about 5-7 sec/100m.

Agreed with much of the above.  Too many variables to make a generalization.  I for one tend to be faster in open water due to the suit and the fact there is no turning at walls.
