At what distance would you include energy gels or sports drink into your training?  I typically will go with anything under 9 miles, I just drink water.  What is everyone elses thoughts?

If I'm running 12 miles or less, I usually don't bring anything. Beyond that, I'll bring a gel for every 6-8 miles, but don't always use them all ... just depends on the day and how I've eaten the day prior. In the summer, I'll bring water in a handheld bottle for runs in the 10-16 range. Sometimes two handhelds if it's particularly hot. Today ... running in 20F, I brought one Gu and one handheld for a 17 miler. I took the Gu at about mile 8 and that was plenty. I drank probably 10 oz of water. That sustained me for two hours and 20 minutes.

I also have a Nathan hydration vest for long runs (18 or more).

90  min or less I usually go with nothing.  Longer than 90 min I might make my route go by a drug store to get some water and a gel.  I have a Camelbak that I race with for ultras, but haven't used it much for my training runs.  I've thought about handhelds but I don't really like anything in my hands when running.  I may have to check one out just to see how it feels though.

I didn't think I'd like them either, but I bought them prior to my injury when I was anticipating training for a Grand Canyon R2R2R this spring. I knew I'd need the hydration vest and then some. I use the Ultimate Direction and am surprised by how much I don't even think about them. The band that holds them in place allows me to relax my hand, so it's not like I'm even really holding on to them. I can carry a camera in the pouch or up to 3 gels.

Edit to Add: Wow ... that's a great price on that bottle.

I go with no nutrition  if under 2 hrs. I just finished a 16.5 miler with just 2 quick stops on course for a drink of water. I don't carry anything with me.
