Subject: Sweat in my eyes?
I previewed my first triathlon course last weekend, and all was well until I got to the run. Then suddenly I had tons of sweat (mixed with sunscreen) running into my eyes. I had to keep taking off my sunglasses and hiking up my jersey so I could wipe my face on it -- not the most efficient way to run! I've never had this problem before -- what do you all do?

I'm not sure a cap would keep the sweat out of my eyes because I don't think it would fit tightly enough or be absorbent enough. I could wear a sweatband, but I'll feel like a refugee from the early 80s. Any other ideas?

Wear the sweatband or cap (the cap might not absorb the sweat, but it should redirect it to the side of your noggin).  No one will care that you look like a refuge from the 80's.  You will see people running in saggy bike shorts, peeing in the bushes and blowing snot out of their noses - it's one of the cool things about tri-ing - it is all about you and no one is going to spend a lot of time thinking about how your dressed, and anyway, the stranger the better!

Actually, I really like the cap. Tom's right, it does redirect sweat. But don't just wear a ball cap that you have. It should be a runner's cap. Mesh sides, typically and made of a lightweight absorbent material.

But on the other side--I have a good friend who does long distance runs (1/2 marathons and marathons) and she always uses a headband, and actually she looks pretty spiffy. She's one of those people who has the cool running outfits and things like that. It's just some sort of stretchy head band that one might use to keep their hair out of their faces while washing it or something.

Best to you!

Check out http://www.wiley-x.com
I've had WileyXs now for some time and I've never had a bad experience with them. I have not run with my pair per se, but i have sweated in them and had no problems with sweat getting into my eyes. Hope this helps...

Maybe I could just keep my swimming goggles on the whole time.

I'll wear a sweatband if you wear one too! The feeling of sweat running down my face makes it itch! And when it gets into my eyes, I feel like I'm going blind.

Hmm, I think I'll look for a crazy looking one. I figure if it's kooky enough, you go past the dork stage into the kitsch stage -- like the dude from The Royal Tennebaums!

I got this sweat band thing from Performance Bike shop. It's a sweat band but its kind of like a bandana that ties in the back. I wear it with a visor and I have no problems with sweat in my eyes. I have no hair up there either so I'm an expert on this stuff.

Alot of the running caps have a sweat bank built into the cap around the band.  It is a terry cloth and works quite well.

Wow. Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! I'll look for a running cap online. I've thought about a visor, too, Sean -- I'm not sure I'll like having my whole head covered while I'm running.

Sweat bands look kind of dorky...but hey, they work! I do not like wearing hats; I prefer to wear one of those pirate type kerchieves on my head.

I just use an osh-kosh hanky tied up like a bad biker do-rag. It's also a stand by bandage if I hit the pavement.

Grow really big and thick eyebrows. I get sweat down my nose and cheeks, but not much in my eyes, on the run. I do have some problems on the bike. When I look down for my water the built up sweat in my eyebrow comes over the top, covers my glasses and gets in my eye.

Maybe try a couple of those wrist sweat bands like the tennis players used to wear. They are absorbant and thick and terry cloth like. This way your head will be still uncovered and not dorky looking (if you are worried about "the look"). Personally I like wearing my hair in a pony with my bangs tucked under light cotton ball cap. I hate it when my hair is wet and hanging in my face and down my neck. Since I wear glasses, the cap helps keep the rain out of my eyes as well. I wear one of those elasticy bands on my glasses to keep them from sliding down my nose.

I wear a headband and also a wristband. I use the wrist band to wipe away anything that has passed through the headband. Yes, I sweat profusely and its pretty nasty when I can wring out the headband afterwards but it does the trick.

Robby, what style do you use? What do you wear them for? I like the look of them and may purchase a pair, so any insught you an offer would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Robert T,
I have the HVP Series SG-1 V Cut. Since I'm in the military I use mine whenever we're out in an exercise or deployments. Also work great for parachuting. A buddy of mine bought one of the "No Tear" Series and loves them. Hope this helps....

Thank you Robby; I've emailed them asking if they have a pair that are designed for runners/cyclists.

Subject: I tried a bandanna last night
Last night, I rolled up a bandanna and tied it around my head like a headband. Even though it was black, it didn't seem to make me hotter and definitely helped keep sweat out of my eyes. It was also a plus when Hubby dumped water on my head to cool me down. It prevented the water from streaming into my eyes and soaked up water so I had a nice cool band around my head. The only downside was I looked like I belonged in a Bruce Springsteen video.

Don't put sunscreen on you forehead and wear a running cap slightly tilted back. To the point that when you are looking straight, the edge of the ball will let the sweat go back. When running don't look down but rather straight forward.
About growing bushy eyebrows, I think that's what they are for, besides for providing shade for your eyes; anything else like plucking them is is is is ......
just not practical.

I wear a sweatband (Underarmour makes some nice loose ones) and a wrist band.  It seems to work well and keeps any stray hair off my face.

Really don't care what I look like as long as it works.

I've got a Nike visor that is made of a wicking material and it's awesome. I found it at Galyans, but haven't seen it online anywhere. Comes in white, black, and red with a tiny swoosh on the front.
