The worst wrecks around here have been when people didn't see the bikes on the road.  At least if they yell, it means they see you.

I enjoyed the picture.

kmac1346 - 2012-03-08 10:14 AM I usually just try to keep going and ignore.  Like others have said, I don't want to absorb their negative energy.  But sometimes, especially if its happened several times already that day, or if they get particularly close, that middle finger just seems to have a mind of its own and jumps up there.  I hate it when that happens.

Tsk, tsk... damn that middle finger, hehe! Innocent

Smile and wave even if you didn't do anything wrong - neutralize angry energy.    I apologize if I'm within hearing distance.  Diluting/neutralizing road rage is my method of staying alive out on these roads.  DO NOT ENGAGE. There's way too many ticking time bombs just waiting to explode.  I don't want to be near any one of these people and they do show up.

Totally agree with above.  This is my philosophy.

Now living here in Idaho I wouldn't be all that surprised to see something like that!!! :-)

I honestly don't get too many yellers out this way, but I did have a couple of knuckle heads on some crotch rockets rev it up a bit when they got to passing me!! Not really a yell, but I got what they were trying to say. I just shook my head, like my engine better and then I thought what idiots no helmets!!! I wonder if they would mock me when I arrive on scene to haul them into the hospital!?

I am going to try to switch to the smile and wave frantically action.  I usually get very irate throw my hands up and scream for them to pull over.

I will say my driving has become much better since I started biking

I usually do the smile and wave.

When they have put me in danger, then they get the one finger salute and a few obsenities. They're usually tourists.

I usually ignore.  Actually, there are some in this area (generally retired folk) that tap their horn before passing out in the country.  They're actually trying to be polite and let us know they're coming around.  They're also the ones that pass really, really, slowly.  So slow it makes you a little nervous.  But they're intentions are good, can't knock them for that.

My father is like this, he actually told my siblings and I to do this "whenever we pass a bicycle out in the country, just to be sure they know you're there".

I'm embarrassed to say I followed his advice until I started cycling myself and realized it's not necessary and worse, annoys some cyclists.

I asked him about it one day, he he said it's what he was taught to do when he learned to drive on the farm in Indiana in 1935.  So yes it's a retired person's thing. :-)

A wave and an "I like your sweater" usually leave people puzzled, I love it.

That always scares the crap out of me!  I know they're trying to be nice, but I hate it.  I just smile and wave thanks to them too.

Yep, smile and wave.

I've posted before about the beer bottle that was thrown at me......the only thing I learned from that is don't throw a beer bottle at me, I have no control over THAT guy.

10+ years ago a car full of students on the last day of High School threw a text book at a biker and paralyzed him.  The kid that threw it was convicted of a felony and spent 18 months in jail.  A split second stupid decision changed two lives forever.

No doubt....I'm so happy in my life it's hard for me to get mad....but don't throw something at me....just don't.  I have references. Laughing

I normally smile and wave, or smile and shrug, but also shout some obscenity at them in a foreign language.  I've got quite a collection in English (that's English-English not American-English!), Portugese, French and Arabic, and I'm always collecting more.  Makes me feel better, especially as they probably don't understand me!

Maybe someone can clue me in, as I haven't taken to the streets on a bike much. What is going so wrong in people's lives that they make a special effort to roll down their window, risk a fenderbender by taking their eyes off the road, and yelling at bicyclists? What are they yelling for??

I've only heard cyclists using their voices as horns when idiot drivers are about to plow into them. Some of them are quite good at it, makes me jump if I'm in my car waiting at a red light...penetrates my rolled-up windows!

It appears that when you force a car to wait for three seconds to pass you on your bike they feel it is their obligation to point out you shouldn't be on the road, and that it is only for cars by yelling and saluting you with a solo finger of their choosing. For some reason three seconds are as valuable to a driver as they are to an IM finisher who crosses the line two seconds behind the winner.

I always pop my head up with a confused look, then pretend like I just realized it was my best friend. Hey buddy! Give them a huge smile and wave. Then they get to figure out if it's someone they knew or not.

biking through the main street on my way home a mini van pulled out from a parking space cutting me off. I had to basically skid around him into the opposing lane so I wouldnt rear end him. When I pulled along side him at the stop light I intended to tell him (ie calmly, no swearing) that he almost hit me. Instead he told me that I should watch where I was going. I called him a dunking retard and finished my ride. Seriously what is wrong with people?

Of all the sports I do biking on the road is BY FAR the most risky, Im getting sick of it.

Wow!  I guess after reading this tread I'm even happier to live in an area where I can ride 100 plus mile days without having to hit the streets and deal with idiot drivers.

Didn't know how lucky I was.

Be careful out there people.

My story,

some soccer mom has a megaphone and says, you have to ride single file (me riding with one other person to any OWS), initial response, we singled up, i look around to see the cop that said it and see none anywhere so back to double, then i see her poke her head out the window and try it again.... learn the law
